Job Description

The Department of Classics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a one-year, non-renewable position as an Instructional Professor (open rank) in Modern Greek, with an expected start date of September 21, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The selected candidate will teach seven courses over the three quarters of the 2026-27 academic year: six courses across the first and second year sequences of Modern Greek language and one non-language course in Modern Greek culture. Please note that candidates should be available to teach in-person from the start of the autumn quarter through the end of the spring quarter.

Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Service duties related to the Modern Greek program may include advising undergraduate theses, creating and overseeing placement exams, co-curricular activities, and outreach. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.

Salary Range or Pay Grade:

Assistant Instructional Professor: $75,676-$81,729; Associate Instructional Professor: $81,730-$88,459; Instructional Professor: $88,460-$98,000 (academic year 2026-2027); this base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master's or PhD degree in a related field, PhD preferred, and demonstrate proficiency in Modern Greek language. Applicants should have prior experience teaching at the college or university level.
