Job Description

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago invites applications for a teaching position at the rank of Instructional Professor (open rank). The selected candidate will be appointed as Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications. The appointment will be for a term of up to five years, renewable. This is a career-track position with potential progression and competitive salary and benefits. Expected start date is academic year 2026-2027.

Position responsibilities include:

· Teach up to six courses per year, including introductory courses in the chemistry major. Collaborative Learning responsibilities will be credited toward and reduce this teaching load.

· Lead and advance a collaborative learning program to support student success and persistence in STEM.

· Incorporate innovative, evidence-based pedagogical approaches, including collaborative learning.

· Contribute to Phoenix STEM program goals, including supporting first-generation and historically underrepresented students.

· Participate in non-classroom instructional and service activities as needed.

· Engage in ongoing professional development.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

1. Completion of a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a closely related field is required prior to the start of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

1. Teaching experience as an instructor of record in chemistry at the University level.
2. Training in pedagogical innovations.
3. Ability to teach introductory sequences in general chemistry, organic chemistry, or chemistry for non-majors.
