Job Description

HKUST is recruiting three (3) Instructional Assistants to support the delivery of AISC1000 Foundations of AI Literacy: Human–AI Orchestration, a new university-wide Common Core course (Human–AI Co-Creation and Data Literacy area) offered to all first-year undergraduates from AY2026-27. The course is delivered primarily in a fully online.

Reporting to the Course Coordinator at The Center for Education Innovation (CEI), the appointees will play a central role in the day-to-day academic operation of the course, including learner support, assessment, and the continuous improvement of learning materials across multiple sections and large student cohorts.

Key Responsibilities

The appointees will:

  • Assist the Course Coordinator and faculty team in the delivery of online sections of AISC1000, including weekly micro-activities, structured discussion forums, a team chatbot competition, and a case study analysis.
  • Moderate and respond to student queries on Canvas LMS discussion forums and other course channels, ensuring timely, accurate, and pedagogically grounded feedback.
  • Grade and provide constructive feedback on case study analyses, reflections, and other assessment components, applying rubrics consistently and supporting LLM-assisted rubric scoring workflows with human oversight.
  • Help prepare, update, and quality-assure course materials, including lecture videos, in-video quizzes, interactive readings, digital whiteboard tasks, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and tutors across sections to maintain grading consistency, share student-progress information, and calibrate assessment standards.
  • Support the team chatbot competition, including coaching student teams, organizing checkpoint reviews, and assisting with the finalist judging process.
  • Contribute to course evaluation, learning analytics, and iterative improvement of activities and assessments based on student data and feedback.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the course (record-keeping, scheduling, communication with Schools/Departments, onboarding of new tutors), and perform other duties as assigned by the Course Coordinator.

Terms of Appointment

Duration: 1 year, fixed-term, renewable subject to performance and operational needs.

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • A bachelor's degree, preferably a master's degree, in education, learning sciences, cognitive science, computer science, data science, AI, or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in AI literacy, human–AI collaboration, and undergraduate teaching and learning.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English; working proficiency in Cantonese or Putonghua is an advantage.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively as a team player across faculty, GTAs, and administrative colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks at scale, attend to detail, and work independently in a fast-paced, multi-section course environment.

The following will be considered advantages:

  • Prior teaching, tutoring, or GTA experience in higher education, particularly in large-enrollment, online, or blended courses.
  • Hands-on experience with generative AI tools and agentic systems (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, custom GPTs, chatbot builders) and an understanding of their capabilities, limitations, and failure modes.
  • Familiarity with Canvas LMS, learning analytics, rubric design, or LLM-assisted grading workflows.
  • Background in instructional design, multimedia learning (e.g., Mayer's principles), assessment, or learning analytics.
  • Experience supporting student competitions, hackathons, or project-based learning activities.
