Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Instructional Aide ELL
HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday - 7.0 hours per day, 171-day calendar

STARTING SALARY: $15.00 hourly

This position is responsible for providing additional educational support for

those students in grades kindergarten through fifth grades in large classrooms and/or who are not performing at

grade level in reading and math. In addition, the instructional aides support the schools’ program by assisting in

the recess activity program and filling in for the office staff as needed and/or assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses students in reading and math using a variety of tools (e.g. assessments, running records, etc.) for the purpose of determining student progress and learning needs.
  • Collaborates with and takes direction from classroom teachers for the purpose of aligning small group and individual instruction with classroom needs.
  • Coordinates with the building principal or other appointed supervisor for the purpose of prioritizing students to be included in the small groups.
  • Gathers materials for lessons, with the support from the classroom teacher, for the purpose of instructing students at levels appropriate to their needs.
  • Meets with students usually in small groups for the purpose - of working on specific areas of need.
  • Monitors recess for the purpose of ensuring a safe and healthy recess time.
  • Performs a variety of tasks, appropriate to the role of instructional aide (e.g. lunchroom duty, copying materials, laminating, filling in for office staff during lunch hour, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or

    coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • If the school building is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios;

read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and

understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to

satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities/behaviors;

codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; curriculum and instructional methods; English grammar/punctuation/

spelling/vocabulary; health standards; instructional media/equipment; office equipment/software; office practices;

and safety practices.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to

meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of

the job include: administer first aid; customer service; effective listening; instructional techniques; interpersonal

aptitude; managing projects/programs; and office practices.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is

required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using

standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data;

and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select

action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with

equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job

include: adaptability/flexibility; communication with persons of diverse backgrounds/knowledge/skills; confidentiality;

dealing with frequent interruptions; decision making; detail oriented; multi-tasking; motivating others; organizing;

prioritization; reliability; taking initiative; teamwork; willingness to learn effective instructional strategies; and meeting

schedules/deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the performance of light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The position typically involves 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The position requires visual acuity as well as frequent hearing and talking and some crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and significant fine finger dexterity. This position is performed in an indoor and generally hazard free environment.
