About Chattanooga, UTC, and the Department
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is in the heart of Tennessee’s fourth largest city. Nestled along the Tennessee River between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains, Chattanooga offers breathtaking natural beauty, lively city amenities, and a small-town feel. Our city has it all, with historic cultural institutions like the Bessie Smith Cultural Center; iconic attractions like Rock City, the Tennessee Riverwalk, and the Tennessee Aquarium; ample opportunities for outdoor adventures ranging from hiking to climbing to kayaking and more; and an eclectic contemporary art, music, and food scene.
UTC is the second-largest campus in the University of Tennessee System and serves a diverse student body of more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students through five academic colleges. Since its founding as Chattanooga University in 1886, UTC has established a reputation for excellence built on a unique blend of the private and public traditions of American higher education. As a national model for metropolitan universities, UTC collaborates with its many regional partners to offer an experiential learning environment with outstanding teaching scholars in 128 undergraduate degree programs and 55 graduate programs—at both the master's and doctoral levels. UTC embodies Chattanooga’s dynamic spirit, serving as one of the city’s most vital institutions where progressive transformation and community thrive. UTC is where Chattanooga goes to build the future.
The UTC Library has an award-winning library instruction program aimed at preparing students with the research and technology skills needed to become successful scholars and citizens. The majority of the Library’s instructional activities are delivered through the Department of Research and Public Services which is comprised of three operational units: Research Services, Studio (our creative technology space), and the Writing and Communication Center. Library instruction at UTC is integrated throughout the curriculum, all the way from first-year seminars and the nationally-recognized Rhetoric and Composition program to senior and graduate seminars. Research Services consists of five faculty librarians and one professional staff member who, collectively, taught over 300 library instruction sessions in 2025, reaching over 4,200 students, with thousands more students taking advantage of our robust suite of online instructional opportunities. Research Services partners closely with departmental colleagues to provide collaborative, multimodal support to the entire UTC community, helping to make the UTC Library the campus hub for research and creative projects that make a difference in the community and in our student’s lives.
