The Insights Analyst supports the Data Insights Delivery Lead in uncovering insights that inform and influence strategic, operational and tactical decisions across the business. This includes conducting exploratory analysis, shaping analytical questions and translating business needs into structured insight requests.

The role contributes to the development and maintenance of reporting semantic models in Power BI, working closely with the IT team to ensure alignment with certified definitions and modelling standards. The Insights Analyst guides report design through wireframes and analytical logic and plays a key role in connecting business context to data structure across the value stream.

During the transition to Microsoft Fabric, the role supports the day-to-day management of existing insight systems, their progressive retirement and the transfer of relevant data assets to the new platform in coordination with IT.

The role works under the guidance of the Data Insights Delivery Lead, progressively increasing autonomy as capability and trust grow.

1. Analysis and Insight

  • Conduct exploratory analysis to uncover trends, anomalies and value drivers that inform strategic, operational and tactical decisions.

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to frame analytical questions, test hypotheses and translate insight needs into structured requests.

  • Connect business context to data structure across the value stream.

  • Surface findings clearly through analytical storytelling and business-ready narratives.

2. Requirements and Intake Support

  • Support the Data Insights Delivery Lead in running a structured intake and prioritisation process for insight demand.

  • Capture and document business requirements clearly and consistently.

  • Translate agreed priorities into clear requirements and brief IT and data teams for delivery, under the direction of the Insights Delivery Lead.

  • Support sequencing and trade-off communication with stakeholders.

3. Semantic Models and Data

  • Contribute to the design, build and maintenance of reporting semantic models in Power BI, ensuring alignment with certified definitions and modelling standards.

  • Define facts, dimensions and hierarchies with the IT team (Lead Data Modeller) to inform modelling across the medallion layers.

  • Apply best-practice DAX and modelling patterns under the direction of the Insights Delivery Lead.

  • Align with the Fabric and IT team on data model readiness, pipelines and refresh schedules.

  • Optimise performance and reliability across semantic models in use.

4. Wireframes, Design and Build

  • Develop wireframes and analytical logic to guide report and dashboard design, confirming with users before build.

  • Build Power BI dashboards and reports that translate analytical intent into clear, usable outputs.

  • Design for clarity and usability across navigation, level of detail and interpretability.

  • Apply consistent visual standards (palette, formatting, chart types, naming) across the insights estate.

5. Validation, Release and Documentation

  • Test and validate dashboards pre-release for accuracy, logic, edge cases and rendering, including UAT sign-off where required.

  • Support a controlled release process with documented approvals and rollback steps.

  • Maintain lightweight documentation covering logic, sources, refresh schedules and end-user guidance.

6. Governance and Metric Consistency Support

  • Reinforce agreed metric definitions and sources of truth in day-to-day analysis and reporting.

  • Validate logic, refresh cadence and usability before release against agreed standards.

  • Support the Insights Delivery Lead in partnering with the Data Governance Lead to embed consistent definitions, standards and naming conventions.

  • Support governance change management, including process, communications and rollout.

7 Adoption and Enablement Support

  • Support the Insights Delivery Lead in delivering data literacy programs across the business.

  • Deliver walkthroughs, hands-on enablement and end-user documentation for new and existing dashboards.

  • Support adoption plans, monitor usage and iterate based on feedback.

  • Support retirement, consolidation or refresh of insight assets to keep the estate relevant and trusted.

8. Continuous Improvement and Cross-System Awareness

  • Iterate dashboards post-release based on usage, feedback and changing business needs.

  • Simplify and automate reporting where possible to reduce manual effort and improve consistency.

  • Stay current on Power BI, Fabric and adjacent capabilities to lift quality.

  • Develop a working understanding of upstream and downstream systems beyond Power BI and Fabric, including source systems and legacy BI tools.

  • Support impact assessment, testing and communication when system or data changes affect existing dashboards or reports.

Essential:

  • 4 to 5 years’ experience in analytics, BI or insights roles, preferably in multi-site retail, QSR or hospitality.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated capability capturing and documenting business requirements.

  • Strong ability to translate ambiguous questions into clear, testable requirements and usable reporting products.

  • Experience supporting adoption and measurable value from dashboards and reports, not just delivery.

  • Experience working with finance, commercial or operational stakeholders.

  • Strong analytical thinking and a curiosity for solving business problems with data.

  • Familiarity with AI tools and a strong interest in developing the skills to apply and embed them across analytics workflows.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience contributing to semantic model design or maintenance in Power BI.

  • Exposure to a multi-system reporting environment, including legacy tools.

  • Experience supporting governance, metric standards or data quality initiatives.

Tooling

  • Power BI (report design, DAX fundamentals, semantic model concepts).

  • SQL (validate outputs and query authoring).

  • Enterprise BI and reporting tools exposure (e.g. Tableau, SAP BusinessObjects).

  • Microsoft Fabric and Azure data platforms (e.g. Synapse).

  • Excel (ad-hoc analysis and executive-ready outputs).

  • ERP and master data concepts.

Supporting Capabilities

  • Semantic modelling.
