Job Description

Role Purpose

Corning is an American group with more than 175 years of history and is recognized as a leader in glass technology innovation.

Active in most of the group’s activities for over 50 years, the Corning European Technology Center, based in Fontainebleau‑Avon (77), provides expertise in research, development, and engineering.

In this context, we are seeking an Opto‑Mechanical R&D Engineer (M/F/D) You will play a key role in the design, integration, and fine‑tuning of ultra‑high‑precision opto‑mechanical sub‑assemblies, at the heart of the development of innovative optical connectivity solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities will include:

Opto‑Mechanical Development

  • Design and develop micro‑mechanical assemblies enabling ultra‑high‑precision optical alignment.
  • Define tolerances, alignment strategies, and assembly concepts compatible with micrometer‑level precision and high‑volume manufacturing.
  • Design components, tooling, and coupling solutions for fiber‑to‑waveguide / fiber‑to‑micro‑optics interfaces.

Integration & Fine‑Tuning

  • Set up optical test benches and characterize performance (losses, stability, robustness).
  • Identify alignment and repeatability limits and propose product‑oriented design improvements.

Cross‑Functional Interface

  • Collaborate with process, materials, packaging, and industrialization teams, as well as external partners.

Documentation & Robustness

  • Prepare technical documentation and ensure project reporting (progress, risks, critical issues).

Experiences/Education - Required

We are seeking a micro‑mechanics or precision mechanical engineer A first confirmed professional experience is preferred, while remaining open to more experienced profiles.

Required Skills

  • Experience or strong interest in working on mechanical systems with extremely tight tolerances (from sub‑micron to a few microns).
  • Knowledge of constraints related to micro‑fabrication.
  • Solid understanding of alignment, mechanical stability, and integration / packaging constraints.
  • Proficiency in a CAD tool (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or equivalent).

Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of optical alignment principles and error budgets.
  • Experience in integrated photonics or fiber‑optic assemblies.
  • Experience in optical connectivity or micro‑optoelectronic packaging.

Personal Qualities

  • You are rigorous, well‑structured, and comfortable with fine tolerance analysis and complex physical phenomena.
  • You enjoy moving from design to hands‑on integration, accept technical iterations, and are able to defend your design choices with solid, well‑reasoned arguments.
