Job Description

Work location: on-site, Houston, Texas 77020

This role is primarily office-based, with occasional support needs that may involve field or job site environments depending on business requirements.

When visiting operational sites, team members may need to follow site safety requirements and use appropriate protective equipment.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Orion is looking for an IT Infrastructure Engineer II who enjoys solving complex technology problems, strengthening reliable systems, and helping people stay connected to the tools they need to do their best work. In this role, you will help support the infrastructure that keeps our business moving, including networks, servers, cloud services, identity platforms, security tools, monitoring, backup, and collaboration technologies.

This is a hands-on role for someone who likes variety: one day you may be troubleshooting a network issue, the next you may be helping improve security, documenting a repeatable process, supporting a project rollout, or working with teammates and vendors to resolve an operational challenge.

We are looking for someone who takes ownership, communicates clearly, follows through, and brings a practical engineering mindset to infrastructure operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in hybrid environments, learning new technologies, improving documentation, and helping build more consistent, secure, and supportable systems.

If you are an infrastructure professional who likes to dig into details, improve how things work, and be part of a team that values Safety, Quality, Delivery, Teamwork, and Integrity, this could be a strong fit.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Keep core technology running well

  • Support and improve infrastructure services through hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, remediation, and follow-through.
  • Work across technologies such as SD-WAN, firewalls, switches, VPN/remote access, servers, storage, Microsoft 365, Active Directory/Entra ID, Windows Server, VMware, monitoring, and backup platforms.
  • Assist with monitoring, alerting, backup, disaster recovery readiness, and operational reliability practices to help maintain uptime, recoverability, and service continuity.

Help deliver projects and improvements

  • Support infrastructure projects through implementation, testing, documentation, coordination, and transition to steady-state operations.
  • Participate in infrastructure changes, upgrades, and maintenance activities while clearly communicating status, risks, issues, and follow-up items.

Strengthen security and reliability

  • Help strengthen security through patching, secure access practices, configuration improvements, vulnerability remediation, and operational follow-up.
  • Support day-to-day security operations such as endpoint protection, alert review, identity hardening, email security, and infrastructure-related incident response.
  • Use clear documentation, consistent standards, and thoughtful change practices to support stable and reliable operations.

Make things easier to support

  • Identify opportunities to improve infrastructure performance, reliability, security, documentation, and standardization.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including diagrams, procedures, build standards, troubleshooting notes, change records, inventory-related records, and runbooks.
  • Develop repeatable automation, scripts, configuration templates, and runbooks, such as PowerShell, to reduce manual effort and improve consistency.
  • Coordinate with the Service Desk, Applications team, vendors, and other stakeholders to resolve issues, support projects, and ensure clear handoffs.

Be ready when the business needs support

  • Participate in after-hours response as needed for alerts, calls, emails, or notifications that impact business operations or uptime.
  • Ensure incident response communications and handoffs are clear, timely, and documented.

Broader IT support and other duties

  • Provide backup coverage across infrastructure domains and cross-train with team members to reduce single points of knowledge.
  • Support broader IT initiatives and perform other related technical duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

How you work

  • You take ownership, follow through, and can work independently while keeping others informed.
  • You communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences and know when to ask questions or raise risks.
  • You are curious, hands-on, and willing to learn new technologies through research, testing, and practical application.
  • You document your work, pay attention to details, and look for ways to make support easier for the whole team.

Your experience

  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is helpful, but equivalent hands-on experience is valued. Relevant technical certifications are a plus.
  • 4–8 years of practical infrastructure experience across network, server, cloud, security, or virtualization environments.
  • A strong understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals and how secure practices show up in everyday infrastructure work.
  • Working knowledge of platforms such as SD-WAN, firewalls, switches, VPN, Windows Server, storage, Microsoft 365, Active Directory/Entra ID, and VMware or similar virtualization platforms.
  • Comfort using scripting or automation, such as PowerShell, to reduce repetitive work and improve consistency.
  • Experience contributing to technology projects from implementation and testing through documentation and handoff.
  • Proficient with standard Microsoft productivity tools (Visio, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) for documentation, diagrams, reporting, and communication.
  • Sound judgment when working with sensitive systems, access, and information.

HOW WE WORK

  • We put safety first and expect team members to stay aware of their own safety and the safety of those around them.
  • We value quality, accountability, teamwork, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
  • We trust our technology team with important systems and information, so good judgment and professionalism matter.
