Education

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, renewable energy Engineering, Civil Engineering, mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
• Master's degree in a relevant field is desirable.

Experience

• Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in renewable energy, infrastructure engineering or construction management.
• Demonstrated experience in the planning, design review or implementation of renewable energy systems, particularly solar PV.
• Experience managing or supporting infrastructure and construction projects.
• Experience working with consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience in international development, humanitarian or climate resilience programmes is highly desirable.
• Experience in working across different country and contexts is highly desirable.

Technical Competencies

• Strong understanding of renewable energy technologies and energy-efficient infrastructure.
• Sound knowledge of infrastructure planning, construction processes and engineering quality assurance.
• Ability to review engineering designs, BoQs, technical specifications and consultant outputs.
• Familiarity with engineering design software and project management tools.
• Understanding of environmental and social safeguards applicable to infrastructure projects.
• An appreciation of emerging renewable energy financing mechanisms, including blended finance, carbon finance and public-private partnership models, with the ability to contribute technical inputs to multidisciplinary project teams.

Expected Contribution
The Renewable Energy & Infrastructure Engineer will strengthen AKF's technical capacity to deliver high-quality, climate-resilient infrastructure and renewable energy programmes. The position will play an important role in supporting country teams, improving engineering quality, fostering innovation, and expanding AKF's renewable energy portfolio while contributing to the broader objectives of the Built Environment Unit.

The position

The Infrastructure & Renewable Energy Engineer will provide technical leadership on renewable energy initiatives across AKF's global portfolio, with particular emphasis on solar energy systems, energy-efficient infrastructure, and community-based clean energy solutions.

Reporting to the Global Lead, Built Environment (BE), the Engineer will collaborate closely with country teams, consultants, contractors and development partners to ensure that infrastructure investments are technically sound, climate-responsive, and delivered to appropriate engineering and quality standards, and support the planning, technical review, implementation oversight, and quality assurance of infrastructure programmes across AKF countries.

Approx. 60% of the role will focus on renewable energy and 40% on broader built environment and infrastructure programmes.

Key Responsibilities
Renewable Energy Technical Leadership

• Provide technical leadership on ren. energy programmes, with particular emphasis on solar PV systems, hybrid energy systems, mini-grids, biogas, battery storage and energy efficiency.
• Advise country teams on ren. energy options appropriate to local contexts, including public facilities, community infrastructure and household-level energy solutions.
• Review technical studies, engineering designs, Bills of Quantities (BoQs), specifications and consultant deliverables.
• Provide technical guidance during procurement, implementation, commissioning and handover of renewable energy systems.
• Support quality assurance through technical reviews, site visits and monitoring missions.
• Contribute technical inputs to programme design, donor proposals and resource mobilisation initiatives.
• Support the technical assessment of ren. energy business models and financing approaches, including public-private partnerships, blended finance, results-based financing and other innovative delivery mechanisms.
• Monitor developments in ren. energy technologies and identify opportunities for innovation across AKF programmes.

Infrastructure and Built Environment Support

• Support the Global Lead, BE in providing technical oversight of infrastructure programmes across AKF countries.
• Review eng. designs, drawings, technical specifications and consultant submissions for infrastructure projects.
• Support planning, implementation and monitoring of projects involving public buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, WASH infrastructure, roads, settlements and climate-resilient infrastructure.
• Coordinate with consultants, contractors and country eng. teams to ensure quality, compliance and timely delivery.
• Participate in technical missions, construction monitoring visits and project reviews.
• Assist in resolving technical implementation challenges encountered by country programmes.
• Support development of technical standards, guidance notes and quality assurance procedures for the BE Unit.

Programme Management and Coordination

• Support preparation of project budgets, cost estimates and technical workplans.
• Monitor implementation progress and identify technical risks affecting programme delivery.
• Support reporting to donors and management on ren. energy and infrastructure initiatives.
• Work closely with AKF GPT teams to promote integrated, climate-resilient solutions.
• Contribute technical inputs to the development of investment cases, financial models and business cases for ren. energy initiatives, working collaboratively with programme, finance and external partners to ensure that projects are technically feasible, cost-effective and operationally sustainable.

Knowledge Management and Capacity Building

• Build technical capacity of country eng. teams through mentoring, guidance and training, and capture lessons learned and good practices.
• Develop technical tools and reference materials to strengthen programme quality.
• Foster collaboration with external technical institutions, universities and professional networks.
