The Engineering Project Team Leader oversees the Engineering Data & Asset Management unit for HMS Ferries Puerto Rico, ensuring that all fleet maintenance activities, engineering data, and regulatory records are accurately captured, verified, and reported. This leadership role is essential to OMA contract compliance, supporting fleet readiness, and guaranteeing the integrity of all data entered into the HELM maintenance management system.
This position leads the team responsible for engineering data collection, asset history maintenance, recurrent and non-recurrent maintenance tracking, Coast Guard inspection documentation, and the production of OMA-mandated reports. The Team Leader ensures workflow quality, assigns daily responsibilities, trains staff, and acts as the primary point of escalation for maintenance data discrepancies, compliance gaps, and asset documentation issues. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical ability, leadership capability, excellent organizational skills, and a demonstrated commitment to safety, accuracy, and operational excellence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead, supervise, and mentor the Data & Asset Management team, ensuring high-quality work, accuracy, and adherence to deadlines.
• Assign, prioritize, and review team workload for daily operations, reporting, HELM data entry, and regulatory documentation.
• Conduct training sessions for new team members on HELM, OMA requirements, USCG documentation, and maintenance workflows.
• Perform QA/QC on all engineering data before submission to the Port Engineer or government entities.
• Serve as the primary escalation point for maintenance documentation issues or discrepancies.
• Support the Port Engineer in coordinating major projects, and compliance initiatives.
Perform diagnostic troubleshooting assistance and resolve documentation issues for complex equipment systems.
• Guide technicians on maintenance procedures, best practices, and data logging standards.
• Lead preventive and predictive maintenance data tracking to improve fleet reliability.
• Conduct or oversee RCA documentation and track corrective actions in HELM.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Procurement, and Warehouse teams to improve processes.
• Maintain and verify all fleet maintenance records in HELM to ensure OMA and USCG compliance.
• Oversee daily machinery readings documentation and trend reporting.
• Ensure accurate scheduling and closure of preventive maintenance tasks.
• Oversee and track corrective maintenance items to completion.
• Approve team warehouse material requests and non-inventory purchasing documentation.
• Oversee research and documentation of first-time purchases and maintain master log.
• Oversee preparation of all OMA reports (weekly, monthly, annual).
• Lead creation and distribution of the daily Asset Status Report.
• Track and maintain all USCG inspection documentation.
• Ensure all administrative engineering records are audit-ready.
• Oversee opening, tracking, and closing of HELM job items including dry-dock lists.
• Support additional responsibilities required for compliance and fleet readiness.
• Other duties as assigned by the Port Engineer or Engineering leadership.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
• 3+ years of experience in marine maintenance, engineering operations, or fleet administration preferred.
• Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
• Strong expertise with HELM or other maintenance systems required.
• Knowledge of USCG regulatory requirements preferred.
• Experience with OMA reporting preferred.
• Strong QA/QC and data management abilities.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office with strong Excel skills.
• Ability to interpret technical data and OEM manuals.
• Strong communication and cross-department leadership ability.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong commitment to safety and compliance.
