The Governance, Policy, and Engagement division and the Financial and Business Services division provide strategic leadership and coordinated direction to support Alberta’s post secondary system. Working closely with senior ministry leaders, the division ensures that timely, accurate, and well integrated information is available to support decision making for the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Assistant Deputy Minister. The division plays a central role in tracking and analyzing issues, aligning divisional work with government priorities, and ensuring that complex policy, operational, and communication needs are addressed consistently across program areas. Through strong relationships, proactive issues management, and collaboration with executive offices, the division drives high quality briefing materials, supports cross ministry coordination, and upholds the credibility and effectiveness of the ministry’s policy and strategic initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Strategic Issues Manager, the Information and Issues Advisor plays a key role in managing high‑impact information for the ADM, Deputy Minister, and Minister. This role operates in a dynamic environment that requires sound judgment, political acuity, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to distill complex information into clear, actionable insights. You will work closely with senior leaders, program areas, and other executive offices to ensure issues are identified early, responses are coordinated effectively, and divisional work aligns with ministry priorities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Track, review, and coordinate divisional deliverables—including briefings, correspondence, and action requests—to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Liaise daily with the Deputy Minister’s Office, Minister’s Office, Communications, and other ADM offices to gather information, provide updates, and move requests through to completion.
  • Identify emerging issues and trends across the division, advising the ADM and program areas to support timely decision‑making.
  • Review, edit, and support preparation of briefings, correspondence, and sensitive materials to ensure they meet departmental standards and reflect government direction.
  • Work with program areas to gather information, integrate analysis, and prepare responses to urgent inquiries from the ADM, DM, and Minister.
  • Coordinate cross‑division responses by consulting relevant program areas, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with ministry priorities.
  • Manage and support the use of the Action Request Tracking System (ARTS), including assigning, editing, and tracking priority files.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across divisions and partner ministries to support coordinated planning, issues resolution, and information flow.
  • Provide research, analysis, and quality assurance for divisional submissions, ensuring products are succinct, accurate, and strategically aligned.
  • Support divisional planning and reporting processes by providing information on cross‑ministry initiatives and ensuring consistent messaging from the ADMO.

Qualifications

  • University degree with Minimum 2 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft 365 products.

Equivalences may be considered: Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:

  • Experience with the Action Request Tracking System (ARTS).
  • Experience working with executive leaders and senior leadership.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write different types of communication like Letters, Memos, Briefing Notes.
  • Project management and change management experience.
  • Current/Previous Experience working within an ADMO would be a strong asset.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of:
    • Government of Alberta (GoA) structure and processes, including strategic business plans, decision-making processes and practices, related policies, and regulation and legislation.
    • Knowledge of the Access to Information Act (ATIA).
    • Stakeholder Relations Management skills.
    • Strong Political Acumen to deal with incoming priorities.

Notes

This competition is for 2 full-time permanent positions located in Edmonton.

Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.
