40Under the direction of the Infection Prevention Manager, the Infection Preventionist serves as a key leader in protecting patients, workforce members, providers, and the community from healthcare-associated infections and communicable diseases across MarinHealth Medical Center and MarinHealth Medical Network. The Infection Preventionist develops, implements, monitors, and continuously improves infection prevention and control strategies to reduce infection risks, ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, and advance organizational quality and patient safety goals.

In partnership with interdisciplinary leaders and clinical teams, the Infection Preventionist provides subject matter expertise, surveillance, education, consultation, and performance improvement support related to infection prevention, outbreak management, bloodborne pathogen exposure response, and employee immunization programs. The role also supports the planning, implementation, and monitoring of employee health initiatives, including the Annual Employee Immunization Clinic Program, while fostering a culture of safety, regulatory readiness, and evidence-based infection prevention practices throughout the organization.

Job Requirements, Prerequisites and Essential Functions:

Required Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), Microbiology, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related healthcare field required. Master's degree in nursing (MSN), Public Health (MPH), Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Healthcare Administration (MBA), or related field preferred.

Licensure & Certification:

  • Current California Registered Nurse (RN) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license required.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required or must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible Infection Prevention experience in an acute care hospital or healthcare setting required. Occupational Health, Employee Health, or Epidemiology experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • I nfection Prevention & Epidemiology Knowledge of microbiology, infectious disease transmission, isolation precautions, outbreak investigation, epidemiology, and emerging infectious diseases.
  • Regulatory & Compliance: Knowledge of The Joint Commission, CMS, CDC, OSHA, Cal/OSHA, Title 22, and applicable public health agency requirements.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Ability to lead multidisciplinary initiatives, influence change, and build effective partnerships across clinical and operational departments.
  • Data & Performance Improvement: Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and present complex clinical and operational data to diverse audiences.
  • Communication & Education: Strong written, verbal, presentation, consultation, and adult-learning skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting hospital construction and renovation projects, and Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA).
  • Experience collaborating with Engineering, Facilities, Environmental Services, Occupational Health, Employee Health, and Emergency Management programs.
  • Knowledge of sterile processing, environment of care standards, and healthcare safety programs.

Essential Functions

  • Lead infection surveillance, outbreak investigations, and epidemiological monitoring activities.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate infection prevention and control programs.
  • Coordinate employee immunization, tuberculosis screening, respiratory protection, and communicable disease prevention programs.
  • Provide consultation, education, and subject matter expertise to staff, providers, leaders, and committees.
  • Support bloodborne pathogen exposure management and employee health initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, CDC, OSHA, Cal/OSHA, Title 22, and other applicable standards.
  • Lead quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives to reduce healthcare-associated infections and improve patient safety.
  • Prepare reports, update policies, manage dashboards, update presentations, and deliver recommendations for leadership and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Compensation:

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
