Job Description

Adventist HealthCare is seeking an experienced Infection Preventionist to provide interim support for its acute inpatient rehabilitation service line. This is a highly visible, leadership-facing role in a fast-paced environment responsible for maintaining a high-performing Infection Prevention program while AHC recruits for the permanent Infection Preventionist III position.

The successful candidate will be comfortable operating autonomously, consulting with clinical and executive leaders, and supporting a top-ranked acute rehabilitation environment.

As a faith-based organization, Adventist HealthCare is committed to its mission of extending God's care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. Candidates should be comfortable working within and supporting AHC's mission-driven environment.

CRITICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Active CIC certification is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of true acute-care Infection Prevention experience is required. Subacute-only experience does not qualify.
  • Candidates must be comfortable functioning autonomously and consulting directly with hospital and executive leadership.
  • Must be flexible to work onsite across Rockville and White Oak based on service-line needs.
  • RN licensure is not required; a Bachelor of Science degree in a related field and active CIC certification are sufficient.

SERVICE LINE & TEAM ENVIRONMENT

  • This is a true acute inpatient rehabilitation environment, not a subacute setting. Facilities operate at high census with frequent admissions and discharges.
  • AHC Rehab White Oak is a hospital-within-a-hospital with approximately 46 inpatient beds.
  • AHC Rehab Rockville is a freestanding rehabilitation hospital with approximately 55 beds, including predominantly semi-private rooms.
  • The Infection Preventionist is expected to be independent, present, and comfortable advising leaders while remaining collaborative, respectful, and receptive to feedback.
  • AHC has a collaborative system-wide Infection Prevention community.
  • A part-time Infection Preventionist supports monthly outpatient rounding.
  • The current Infection Preventionist will remain available as a resource following an internal promotion.

WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS

  • This position supports the Adventist Rehabilitation service line across Rockville and White Oak, Maryland.
  • Candidates must be flexible to work onsite at either location based on clinical and operational needs. Site assignments and visit frequency may vary.
  • Candidates will typically begin and end their shifts at the same assigned location.
  • Occasional travel between facilities during the workday may be required for urgent or emergent Infection Prevention needs.
  • Mileage reimbursement will be provided when travel between facilities is required during the workday.
  • Travel between sites during a shift is infrequent and generally limited to urgent or emergent needs. Historically, this has occurred approximately 10 times over a two-year period.

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS & CONVERSION POTENTIAL

  • This interim assignment provides Infection Prevention coverage while Adventist HealthCare recruits for its permanent Infection Preventionist III position.
  • The initial assignment is anticipated to be 13 weeks, with potential for extension or conversion to permanent employment based on organizational needs and candidate fit.
  • Permanent conversion is not guaranteed.
  • FTE Salary Range: $89,356.80–$134,035.20 annually (permanent position reference only; not contract compensation).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of direct Infection Prevention/Infection Control experience in a true acute-care hospital environment.
  • Experience with infection surveillance, outbreak investigations, isolation precautions, and healthcare-associated infection prevention.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, Joint Commission (JC), CDC, CARF, and applicable local, state, and federal infection prevention regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience working independently and providing Infection Prevention consultation to clinical, physician, operational, and executive leadership.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Active Certification in Infection Control (CIC).

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Experience with infection surveillance, reporting, and healthcare-associated infection monitoring.
  • Familiarity with regulatory reporting requirements and Infection Prevention databases.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to function independently at a CIC level while collaborating with Infectious Disease and system-wide Infection Prevention resources.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and consultation skills.
  • Comfortable serving as a visible Infection Prevention representative in leadership discussions and organizational committees.
  • Ability to work onsite across the rehabilitation service line, including Rockville and White Oak.
  • Flexibility to work from assigned locations based on operational and clinical needs, with occasional travel between facilities for urgent or emergent situations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • More than 10 years of direct Infection Prevention/Infection Control experience.
  • Previous Infection Prevention experience in acute inpatient rehabilitation.
  • Experience with NHSN and Cerner.
  • TheraDoc experience is beneficial; training can be provided.
  • Experience supporting Infection Prevention in private and semi-private inpatient rooms.
  • Experience managing respiratory illness and isolation precautions in high-census inpatient settings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct infection surveillance and outbreak investigations as indicated.
  • Provide integral input into the design and implementation of educational presentations related to infection prevention, isolation precautions, and communicable diseases.
  • Design and support the day-to-day operations of the Infection Prevention program across the acute inpatient rehabilitation service line.
  • Collaborate with Occupational Health and Infectious Disease to investigate significant infection concerns affecting patients and team members.
  • Report communicable diseases to appropriate units, departments, and public health entities as required.
  • Maintain Infection Prevention databases and reporting processes accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Represent Infection Prevention at entity- and system-wide forums, including Infection Prevention workgroups, councils, AHC committees, and leadership discussions.
  • Serve as a visible Infection Prevention subject-matter expert and consultant to rehabilitation, clinical, physician, and executive leaders.
  • Monitor, trend, and support prevention efforts involving CAUTI, VRE, MRSA, ESBL, C. difficile, respiratory illnesses, and other healthcare-associated or communicable infections.
  • Support ongoing policy review and consistent application of service-line Infection Prevention standards, identifying site-specific differences when clinically or operationally necessary.
  • Maintain the service line's current high-performing Infection Prevention program and regulatory readiness, with a focus on preventing significant regression in established practices and outcomes.
