Wieland is hiring an Industrial Maintenance Apprentice. The Industrial Maintenance Apprentice is a full-time, earn-and-learn position designed for students enrolled in the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) program. Apprentices will divide their time between classroom instruction and hands-on learning in a manufacturing environment, working approximately 24 hours per week while attending school approximately 16 hours per week.

This position provides a structured pathway to develop industrial maintenance skills through a combination of classroom education and supervised on-the-job training. Apprentices will work alongside experienced maintenance technicians to learn mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and troubleshooting skills necessary to maintain safe and reliable plant operations. Continued employment in the program requires satisfactory academic performance, consistent school attendance, and reliable workplace attendance. This role is located in Shelbyville, KY and will be fully on-site.

Responsibilities

Industrial Maintenance Apprentice Responsibilities:

Learning and Development

• Successfully participate in all FAME coursework, labs, projects, and required training.
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and skill development.
• Apply classroom concepts to real-world maintenance activities.
• Complete assigned training modules and qualification requirements.
• Work under the guidance of experienced maintenance technicians and supervisors.

Preventive Maintenance

• Assist with preventive and predictive maintenance activities on production equipment.
• Support inspections of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Learn proper lubrication practices and equipment care techniques.
• Assist with routine equipment checks and maintenance documentation.
• Participate in scheduled maintenance shutdowns and improvement projects.

Mechanical Maintenance

• Learn to inspect, repair, and maintain industrial machinery and equipment.
• Assist with equipment alignment, component replacement, and mechanical adjustments.
• Support maintenance activities involving conveyor systems, pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, cylinders, and material handling equipment.
• Develop skills in fabrication, basic welding, rigging, and pipefitting under supervision.
• Learn to read and interpret mechanical drawings, diagrams, and work instructions.

Electrical Maintenance

• Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical systems under qualified supervision.
• Learn to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Support installation and repair activities involving motors, sensors, switches, control devices, and plant equipment.
• Learn basic PLC concepts and how automated systems control manufacturing equipment.
• Assist with equipment inspections to identify electrical hazards or maintenance needs.

Safety and Reliability

• Follow all safety policies, procedures, and environmental requirements.
• Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Maintain clean and organized work areas.
• Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement activities.
• Report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, and maintenance issues promptly.

Teamwork and Professionalism

• Work effectively with production, maintenance, and engineering personnel.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and training documentation.
• Exhibit professionalism both in the workplace and the classroom.
• Perform other learning assignments and duties as required to support operational needs.

Industrial Maintenance Apprentice Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in or accepted into an approved FAME Industrial Maintenance program.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong desire to pursue a career in industrial maintenance.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in industrial equipment.
• Ability to learn technical concepts and apply them in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to work safely in an industrial environment.

Program Expectations:

To remain employed as an Industrial Maintenance Apprentice, participants must:

• Maintain satisfactory academic performance in the FAME program.
• Maintain acceptable attendance in all scheduled classes.
• Maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality at work.
• Successfully complete required coursework, work assignments, and training milestones.
• Demonstrate progress toward developing maintenance technician competencies.
• Adhere to all company policies, safety requirements, and FAME program expectations.
