The Industrial Hygienist serves as a key technical resource to Cedars-Sinai’s clinical, research, and operational teams. This professional role provides industrial hygiene expertise and hands-on services to anticipate, identify, evaluate, and control workplace hazards.

The purpose of the role is to protect the health, safety, and well-being of staff and visitors while enabling our teams to perform their work safely and effectively. The Industrial Hygienist partners with departments to understand their work, assess potential risks, recommend practical protective measures, and evaluate whether controls are effective.

What's This Role All About?

  • Conduct industrial hygiene assessments and exposure evaluations to identify potential chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards and recommend appropriate controls.
  • Analyze incident, injury, exposure, and workplace data to identify trends and emerging risks; investigate contributing factors and recommend preventive actions.
  • Serve as a technical consultant to clinical, research, and operational teams, translating industrial hygiene principles into practical solutions that enable work to be performed safely.
  • Provide professional support for programs including respiratory protection, indoor environmental quality, chemical hygiene, ventilation, noise, ergonomics, confined space, heat stress, biological safety, and workplace violence prevention.
  • Perform and oversee exposure monitoring and environmental sampling, including the selection, use, calibration, and interpretation of industrial hygiene instrumentation and results.
  • Evaluate engineering controls and protective technologies and advise departments on appropriate risk-reduction strategies.
  • Support research laboratories, clinical operations, new construction, renovations, and researcher onboarding by evaluating hazards and recommending appropriate controls.
  • Develop training, technical guidance, safety procedures, and resources that help staff understand hazards and perform their work safely.
  • Lead or participate in investigations, audits, environmental rounds, and risk assessments, partnering with stakeholders to develop and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor emerging hazards, technologies, and regulatory requirements and advise leaders and departments on potential impacts and appropriate actions.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Public Health, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological or Physical Sciences, or a related field.

Licenses:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is desired. Candidates with relevant experience and demonstrated progress toward professional certification will also be considered.

Experience:

  • Three years of professional experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, injury prevention, exposure assessment, or a related field. Experience supporting healthcare, research, laboratory, or similarly complex environments is desired.

Physical Demands:

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking, sitting, standing and carrying frequently.
