Wastewater Collections Division (WCD) is seeking an ambitious Industrial Electrician II to join a diverse group of electricians who support the Wastewater Pumping Stations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of three - phase industrial electrical equipment up to 4160 volts, including MCC, panel boards, standby generators, motors, pump controllers, HVAC equipment, switch gear, rack able breakers, VFD’S and soft starters and other electrical equipment in the Wastewater Pumping Stations.
  • Performs a wide range of complex preventive/corrective maintenance and general housekeeping to maintain continuous operation of industrial electrical equipment.
  • Lists and order necessary parts to restock, repair or replace all industrial electrical equipment throughout the pumping stations.
  • Utilizes computers and software to maintain work orders, requisition parts, for preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Performs work in permit confined spaces, hazardous areas that require respiratory protection and personal protective gear, slippery and wet conditions.
  • Attends required electrical training to ensure work is performed.
  • Comply with the regulatory requirements and national electrical code.
  • Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime.

Note: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Industrial Electrician II position.

Qualifications

(The knowledge, skills and abilities listed in this specification are representative of the class but are not an all- inclusive list.)

  • Journey level knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Journey level knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA and safety codes;
  • Working knowledge of computers, Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers, Computerized Maintenance Management and/or Enterprise Management Systems and Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition systems and diagnostic measures;
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with working with electricity;
  • Working knowledge of supply and policy and procedures;
  • Ability to distinguish different color wiring;
  • Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, blue prints and manuals;
  • Ability to use a computer;
  • Ability to lead other employees;
  • Ability to work in confined spaces;
  • Ability to comprehend confined space training;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.

Supplemental information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; successful completion of an approved electrician's apprentice program and four years of experience as an industrial electrician.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Journeyman Electrician's license.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year experience working in an industrial setting and working on industrial electrical equipment.
  • Four (4) years of work experience observing electrical safe work practices.
  • One (1) year experience reading one line and schematic drawings.
  • One (1) year experience conducting preventive maintenance practices.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish colors of electrical conductors. Ability to drive county vehicles to and from job sites/ pumping stations throughout the county to perform electrical work. Ability to routinely climb ladders and stairs, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend or twist their body to perform troubleshooting of industrial equipment. Ability to stand, kneel or bend for long periods of time and occasional stopping. Ability to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects and to move two or more limbs together while remaining in place. Able to lift 50lbs; drive 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton utility truck and operate hoisting equipment, stooping and extended standing. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances and routine climbing. Ability to work around chemicals and other wastewater treatment chemicals. Must also be able to operate tools in close proximity to electrical components. Must be capable of climbing/crouching in confined areas as this position requires the ability to enter permitted confined spaces. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310 lbs. or more. Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, etc. Must wear arc flash uniform during working time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
