Industrial Buyer Role
The Industrial Buyer manages the procurement of raw materials, specialized equipment, and fabricated components necessary for machinery production. This position exists to secure the best possible product cost and quality by evaluating suppliers and utilizing engineering blueprints to guide purchasing decisions.
Industrial Buyer Responsibilities
Sources raw materials, specialized equipment, fabricated parts, tooling, and components for machinery production using engineering drawings and specifications
Partners with engineering teams to interpret technical drawings and align on Bill of Materials requirements
Engages suppliers to gather detailed product and service information, including pricing, lead times, and availability
Assesses vendor performance against lean production demands to secure on-time delivery of accurate quantities while upholding quality standards
Identifies optimal procurement strategies, weighing options such as direct sourcing versus competitive bidding
Generates purchase orders and bid solicitations while managing accurate order entry in procurement systems
Supports new product initiatives by contributing parts forecasting, material sourcing assessments, cost breakdowns, and component viability reviews
Manages procurement data within digital systems, tracking purchased items, pricing, delivery performance, quality metrics, and inventory levels
Collaborates with quality, operations, and supplier teams to investigate nonconforming materials and implement corrective measures
Drives order fulfillment and delivery timelines to keep production schedules on track
Develops and expands the supplier base to achieve cost reductions and elevate vendor performance
Coordinates with the accounting team to resolve invoice discrepancies, facilitate prepayment requirements, and onboard new suppliers
Industrial Buyer Reporting Relationships
The Industrial Buyer reports directly to the VP of Operations and does not have any direct reports.
About You
Holds a High School diploma or equivalent
Possesses 8-10 years of professional purchasing experience, preferably within an industrial manufacturing environment
Demonstrates the ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings and blueprints
Displays the ability to adjust and change priorities quickly as production needs shift
Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills when interacting with internal teams and external vendors
Shows extensive proficiency with computers including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Demonstrates experience maintaining computerized procurement records and material planning systems
Utilizes strong negotiation skills to initiate cost-reduction measures and establish strategic supplier relationships
