Job Description

This individual placement position will support the operations and management of the Warm Springs Fish Health Center.

Warm Springs Fish Health Center works hand in hand with our regional hatcheries, numerous state hatcheries, tribal hatcheries and private fish farm owners to ensure the aquatic species reared and housed in those facilities are receiving the highest standard of care.

Fish health staff works with hatchery staff to help maintain a pathogen free water supply, prepare and implement effective biosecurity plans, ensure that the all feed is high quality and pathogen free, and address animal health, husbandry, and water quality concerns.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The selected individual will be conducting aquatic animal health inspections and certifications, performing wild fish health surveys, and executing disease diagnostic tests for National Fish Hatcheries, as well as State and Tribal facilities in the southeastern United States.

Members will assist biologists with dissection, collection, packing, transportation, and downstream processing, including performing a variety of laboratory tests on biological materials from aquatic animal tissues for examination;

Help in entering, organizing, and conducting preliminary analyses of collected data using standard statistical methods to prepare aquatic animal health reports;
Support biologists in summarizing data through various database software programs (e.g., LIMS) or other presentation methods, ensuring records are detailed, precise, and accurately maintained.

There will be the opportunity for the selected individual to travel regionally to conduct Tribal, Federal, and State Hatchery inspections.

Marginal Duties

  • Assist with the ordering and recordkeeping of supplies, preparation of media.
  • Storage, as well as the disposal of materials upon completion of assays in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), applicable laws, and regulations
  • Assist fish health staff with various building and property maintenance tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Posses a valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in microbiology, fish health, or fish and wildlife management.
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory setting
  • Travel is required

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

Currently perusing or recently obtained a degree in microbiology, conservation biology, natural resources, or fish/wildlife management.

40 per week

Living Accommodations

Member responsible for acquiring housing. Housing allowance of $500/month provided.

Compensation

  • Living allowance - $600/week
  • Housing allowance - $500/month
  • Reimbursable Moving Allowance of $1,100
  • Reimbursable Duty Related Travel Allowance of $3,500
  • Opt-in Health Insurance

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
