Feasibility of alternative home-grown school feeding models in Guatemala

Background

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is implementing a mixed-methods study to understand the implementation of school feeding models in Guatemala and to assess the feasibility and acceptability of home-grown school feeding models. The study will provide in-depth understanding of the feasibility and trade-offs of different models and inform the potential design and implementation of modifications for program improvement that involve local supply chain actors and small and medium enterprises.

Activities

The collaborator will conduct the following activities:

• Desk review: compile and review peer-reviewed and grey literature and extract information on the design and implementation features of school feeding models implemented in Guatemala over the past 5-10 years.

• Policy review: (a)review government documents and compile information on current national and local guidelines, action plans, strategies, and policies related to school feeding in Guatemala; (b) review agricultural guidelines and policies related to smallholder farmers, small and medium enterprises, local procurement mechanisms, and institutional coordination arrangements that relate to school feeding and local food procurement for school feeding

• Identify school feeding stakeholders: compile a list of key stakeholders working on school feeding in Guatemala.

• Conduct in-depth interviews: conduct 5-10 in-depth interviews with school feeding stakeholders in Guatemala.

• Conduct focus group discussions: facilitate the coordination, organization, and implementation of 4-6 focus group discussions with school feeding stakeholders.

Location: All work will be done remotely and in-person in Guatemala.

Level of effort: The level of effort for this activity is approximately 25 days

Timeline: The work will take place in August-September 2026 All deliverables will be due no later September 30, 2026

Deliverables

1. Desk review report, using IFPRI template, and copies of all reviewed documents

2. Policy review report, using IFPRI template, and copies of all reviewed documents

3. List of school feeding stakeholders, using IFPRI template

4. Transcripts and field notes of in-depth interviews

5. Transcripts and field notes of focus group discussion

   Deliverables can be submitted in Spanish or English.

Required qualifications

• Master’s degree in public health, international development, public policy, nutrition, economics, social science, or other closely related field

• Demonstrated experience with desk and policy reviews

• Demonstrated experiences with qualitative methods

• Demonstrated written proficiency in Spanish

• Demonstrated ability to multi-task, consistently meet deadlines and manage time well

• Demonstrated professional level of attention to detail and accuracy of work

• Ability to work independently, with initiative and minimal supervision
