Independent Contractor Opportunity: Technical Trainer (Automotive)
Location: Richmond, BC (On-Site as Required)
Contract Type: Independent Contractor (Incorporated Consultant)
Term: 12 months, with potential extension
Rate: $70 - $90/hour
Hours: Approximately 30 – 40/week
Mercedes-Benz Canada is seeking an experienced Technical Trainer to provide technical training services supporting our dealership network and service partners across Canada.
This opportunity is intended for an incorporated contractor operating an independent business. The successful contractor will provide services under a service agreement and will be responsible for invoicing Mercedes-Benz Canada for approved hours worked. The contractor will be responsible for all applicable taxes, statutory remittances, insurance, and business expenses.
Assignment Overview
The Technical Trainer will develop and deliver programs that equip technicians to diagnose, repair, and maintain increasingly complex Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), and Electric Vehicle (EV) platforms.
The assignment includes classroom instruction, hands-on workshop facilitation, curriculum development, and technical expertise to strengthen technician capability across the Mercedes-Benz network.
The contractor will also support the day-to-day operation and organization of the Richmond Training Academy.
Key Responsibilities
Training Delivery 60%
- Deliver engaging instructor-led technical training in classroom and workshop environments.
- Facilitate training for technicians at various certification levels, including apprentices, maintenance technicians, master technicians, and shop foremen.
- Deliver training to Mercedes-Benz service partners where required.
- Adapt training approaches to different learning styles and technical skill levels.
Curriculum Development 15%
- Develop, update, and maintain technical training materials, presentations, lesson plans, and learning resources.
- Support training readiness for new vehicle launches, technologies, and repair procedures.
- Ensure training content aligns with Mercedes-Benz global standards and certification pathways.
- Incorporate emerging technologies including EV systems, ADAS, high-voltage systems, advanced diagnostics, and oscilloscopes.
Technical Expertise 10%
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert for vehicle systems, diagnostics, and repair processes.
- Provide recommendations that support technical capability, repair quality, and diagnostic efficiency.
- Maintain current knowledge of Mercedes-Benz products, service information, repair procedures, and industry developments.
Training Facility Support 10%
- Assist with the operation and organization of the Richmond Training Academy.
- Support maintenance and management of training tools, equipment, simulators, and training vehicles.
- Promote and maintain safe working practices within all training environments.
Coordination and Travel 5%
- Support training logistics and scheduling activities as required.
- Travel to dealerships and satellite training locations to deliver training services.
- Participate in regional or global train-the-trainer programs when applicable.
Qualifikationen
Qualifications and Experience
- Recognized automotive technician qualification.
- At least seven years of experience in an automotive technical role and a valid provincial technician licence.
- At least four years of technical experience with Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
- Strong electrical and mechanical diagnostic expertise, including experience with diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and oscilloscopes.
- Experience supporting EV, PHEV, ADAS, and other emerging vehicle technologies is considered an asset.
- Mercedes-Benz certifications and/or High-Voltage Certification are considered assets.
- Previous technical training, coaching, facilitation, or instructional design experience is considered an asset.
- Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in a clear and practical manner.
- Highly organized with strong analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adapt to changing business needs.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Active incorporated business with the ability to invoice for services rendered.
Additional Information
- This opportunity is intended for incorporated contractors only. Applicants must maintain an active corporation and all required business registrations, licences, permits, and approvals necessary to provide the services.
- Services will be provided under an independent contractor agreement. The successful contractor will not be considered an employee of Mercedes-Benz Canada.
- The contractor must invoice Mercedes-Benz Canada for approved hours worked in accordance with the terms of the service agreement.
- The contractor is solely responsible for all applicable taxes, GST remittances, CPP contributions, insurance, statutory remittances, and any other obligations associated with operating an independent business.
- The contractor must maintain appropriate business insurance and, where required, active WorkSafeBC coverage, and provide proof of coverage, registration, or clearance status upon request. The contractor is responsible for complying with all applicable WorkSafeBC and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Only candidates operating through their own incorporated entity and able to invoice for services provided will be considered.
- Occasional evening, weekend, domestic, and international travel may be required.
