Thrive Education Partners is seeking an experienced ISEE preparation tutor to work with a 5th-grade student preparing for the Lower Level ISEE (for 6th-grade independent school entry) in Houston, TX. This is specialized test-prep work—the Lower Level ISEE is a demanding 2+ hour exam that requires not just content knowledge but strong pacing strategy, test endurance, and the ability to help a younger student manage time pressure and fatigue while performing at their best.
Great Lower Level ISEE preparation is about more than drilling content. It means understanding the test's unique structure and timing—particularly the compressed Verbal Reasoning section (34 questions in 20 minutes)—and building both the academic skills and the mental stamina a 5th grader needs to sustain focus and strategy throughout the entire exam. The ideal tutor knows how to teach pacing explicitly, use timed practice to build endurance, identify where the student can gain the most points, and help them approach test day with both competence and confidence.
You'll work with an engaged family that's serious about preparation. Your role is to assess where the student currently stands, design a focused preparation plan that addresses both content gaps and test strategy, monitor progress through practice tests, and adjust your approach based on what the data shows. The goal is to help this student walk into the Lower Level ISEE feeling prepared, capable, and ready to do their best.
At Thrive, effective Lower Level ISEE preparation recognizes that this test is not just an academic assessment—it's a test of endurance, pacing, and strategy under time pressure. Preparation means more than content review; it means understanding the specific structure and timing that makes the Lower Level ISEE challenging, explicitly teaching how to manage that timing, and building the mental stamina a younger student needs to sustain performance throughout.
We're looking for a tutor who can make Lower Level ISEE preparation focused and purposeful. You'll identify what the student can actually improve most quickly, teach pacing that actually works under pressure, use practice tests to guide your instruction, and help a 5th grader feel genuinely capable walking into this demanding exam—not stressed, but prepared.
Consistent weekly sessions—even just one hour a week—allow you to build momentum with the student, monitor progress through regular practice tests, and adjust your focus based on what's actually working. The goal is sustainable preparation that builds both skills and confidence leading up to test day.
This role is ideal for an educator who loves test preparation and understands the particulars of the Lower Level ISEE—not as a generic admissions test, but as a specific challenge with specific solutions. The pacing problem is real, the stamina challenge is real, and solving both requires expertise and intentional teaching.
You'll work with one focused student over a defined preparation timeline, allowing you to see clear progress and genuine impact. Rather than managing a large cohort or working through a preset curriculum, you'll have the autonomy to assess where this student can gain the most points, build instruction around that priority, and adjust as the data guides you.
Most importantly, you'll help a 5th grader who may feel anxious about a big test develop real confidence and capability. Walking a younger student into the Lower Level ISEE feeling prepared, knowing their pacing strategy works, and having the stamina to sustain effort throughout—that's the work that matters here.
