This student position supports advanced research and applied projects within the Institute for Materials & Manufacturing Research (IMR) Battery Center, with a focus on supporting the daily operations of the center, hands-on involvement in battery processing, cell assembly, and equipment setup and maintenance. The intern will work closely with research staff and engineers to help ensure the lab is fully operational, safe, efficient, and responsive to internal and external research needs. This includes preparing materials, processing electrodes, assembling cells, maintaining equipment, supporting experimental workflows, documenting work accurately, and exercising sound judgment in a professional research and manufacturing environment. The Battery Center operates in a startup-like, entrepreneurial environment where students are expected to contribute wherever needed, from complex technical work such as building high-performance battery cells to routine operational tasks such as organizing supplies, cleaning work areas, and taking cardboard out for recycling. The position requires a high degree of responsibility, integrity, organization, communication, and customer service, and is intended for students with significant specialized training or experience in battery research, manufacturing, or related STEM environments. Students who have completed the BATTERI experiential learning program are especially well prepared for this level of responsibility through hands-on battery lab training, project-based learning, exposure to advanced battery manufacturing systems, mentorship, industry connections, and development of an entrepreneurial mindset.

Responsibilities:

• Support operational readiness of the Battery Center, including equipment setup, calibration, and troubleshooting.
• Assist in battery processing tasks, such as slurry mixing, electrode coating, drying, and calendering.
• Participate in cell assembly, including pouch cell fabrication, electrolyte filling, sealing, and formation cycling.
• Maintain lab inventory, manage consumables, and ensure proper storage of sensitive materials.
• Document procedures, equipment status, and experimental results with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Communicate professionally with faculty, staff, students, and external users to coordinate testing schedules, support customer service needs, and ensure smooth workflow.
• Contribute to lab safety practices, continuous improvement initiatives, and responsible stewardship of shared university research facilities.
• Assist with training, orienting, or directing the activities of other student employees as appropriate, using clear communication and sound judgment.

Requirements

• Undergraduate in Engineering
• Previous internship experience in a battery-related research or manufacturing environment
• Completion of the BATTERI experiential learning program or comparable hands-on training in advanced battery manufacturing, battery research, or clean-tech manufacturing is preferred.
• Familiarity with battery dry room environments
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, stay organized, communicate effectively, provide excellent service to facility users, and represent IMR and The Ohio State University with professionalism and integrity.
• Minimum hours / week 10 , Max hours per week 20
