Position Summary:
The responsibility of Lab Assistant I is to provide general assistance to technologists/technicians and pathologists to ensure smooth workflow for the entire department. Responsibilities may include obtaining information from various departments, processing and/or accessioning different types of specimens and providing administrative and organizational support to the department. Due to various environmental hazards presented in the workplace such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc., employees must adhere to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
Position Schedule: M-F, 10:00am - 6:30pm

Essential Duties:
A Lab Assistant I may perform any of the following duties or groups of duties:
- Prepare reagents and buffers for IHC staining protocols.
- Assist technologists with automated IHC staining procedures.
- Load and unload IHC slides from Bond and Ultra Stainers
- Sort runs of slides for IHC QC.
- Assist in daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on the Slide Coverslipper, Bond and Ultra IHC stainers.
- Assist with troubleshooting minor instrument issues and escalate as needed.
- Assist in embedding tissue control material.
- Assist in researching, pulling, and submitting appropriate tissue cases for validation studies and controls.
- Pull blocks and controls slides for IHC cutters.
- Label slides.
- File unstained slides.
- Assist with IHC inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, putting away supplies in designated storage areas, and labeling reagents.
- Track expiration dates and lot numbers of antibodies and reagents.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste according to safety protocols.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and quarterly training opportunities.
- Occasional assistance in slide scanning (digital pathology)
- Assist with documentation for CAP inspections and internal weekly and monthly audits.
- Other duties as assigned.

QualificationsKnowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Adaptable & flexible
- Exceptional time management skills with the ability to multitask
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to perform well under pressure with a large work volume

Qualifications/

Experience:
- Associate’s or bachelor's degree with emphasis in biology/chemistry/anatomy preferred
- Strong attention to detail and the proven ability to follow protocols and SOP's.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Previous experience in embedding a plus.
- Ability to communicated effectively with pathologists, technologists, and leadership.
