Job Description

A Brief Overview
Responsible for executing duties that provide inventory control in the Operating Room. Requisitions, receives, stores, monitors, and distributes supplies, devices implanted, and limited surgical instruments and equipment.
What you will do
  • Performs duties related to requisitioning, receiving, monitoring and distributing all surgical, anesthesia and perfusion supplies, devices implanted surgically and limited surgical equipment
  • Inventories and orders established supplies and implants per special requisition via Material Management System. Uses Value Analysis process for introduction of new products. Communicates variances such as back orders, product substitutions, discontinuances to Business Manager, Team Leaders and staff as appropriate
  • Responsible for procurement of hospital/non-hospital owned prostheses/implants/special supplies for scheduled procedures. Assures that all sizes of prostheses and instruments are available as according to par levels and/or as requested by the surgeon's office. Notifies appropriate team members, including Team Leader/ Specialty Coordinator and/or surgeon of any variance/potential variance from expectation
  • Communicates with other agencies for borrowing/loaning of equipment/supplies/instruments. Follows through on replacing/returning/billing or borrowed or loaned items
  • Notifies sales representative of procedures that require consignment/special inventory
  • Organizes and labels areas used to maintain supplies and bins for supplies/implants in OR and SSP. Creates and maintains charge sheets for implant sets/bins and supply bins. Communicates new/revised information to team members as appropriate
  • Assesses daily materials needs and orders supplies as required to maintain adequate par levels to facilitate the smooth operation of surgical cases
  • Maintains accurate and current records on ordering information, items on order, cost, receipt of items ordered, required logging/quality control data. Facilitates timely patient charging information by working with vendor representative to provide timely, complete bill of goods records
  • Maintains Resource Catalog module of the Surgical Information System by entering new items, updating current items when changes occur and inactivating discontinued items. Communicates information to team members to facilitate information flow to the instrument catalog, supply carts, charge lists, doctor's preference cards, clinical documentation and auditing/billing functions
  • Assigns and maintains log of charge codes. Provides Accounting with updates of the Resource module for the Hospital Information System (additions, deletions, procedure numbers, descriptions and item numbers.)
  • Monitors levels and works with Material Management to establish minimum/maximum supply levels for stock, stockless, or non-stock supplies. Provides Material Management with information to obtain appropriate data for "special order" item entry into the Surgical Information System Resource Catalog and the Hospital Information System Procedure Master
  • Organizes and labels areas for bins used to maintain supplies and implants in OR and SSP
  • Maintains Implant Log
  • Maintains record of loaned/borrowed supplies, instruments, equipment for timely returns, patient charging. Initiates billing for loaned supplies, instruments and equipment. Maintains orderly Receiving Area. Receives, inspects, reconciles, signs for and disperses deliveries. Follows through on discrepancies
  • Rotates stock and manages expiration dates of commercially packaged materials
  • Provides timely information and assistance to the Business Manager of Surgery regarding:
  • New supplies ordering information
  • Supply evaluation results
  • Returning items for credit
  • Providing cost and patient charge information
  • Obtaining information for sterilization parameters
  • HCPCS codes for devices that are used to perform the procedures where such codes exist
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
  • Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist Program Preferred
Experience Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years' relevant experience as a CST with experience in scrubbing general and specialty procedures Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Surgery Information System Database software; Internet software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software
  • Knowledge of surgical implant/instrumentation/supply usage, including knowledge of orthopaedics, neuro and spine, vascular, general, open heart, urological, and other specialties
Licenses and Certifications
