A Brief Overview
The CST is a Certified Surgical Technologist, who performs various care activities including scrub duties and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety of the patients served. The CST provides assistance to professional staff and works under the direction of the registered nurse. The CST must be able to demonstrate growth and development knowledge and skills to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patient served. Employee must be able to successfully complete job specific orientation, competencies, and meet/exceed standards as identified in the criteria-based performance appraisal.

What you will do

  • Prepares materials and equipment for cases as needed and assists physicians in all types of procedures as required
  • Assists in transportation and preparation of patients
  • Ensures transport of specimens and other materials to appropriate areas
  • Maintains unit supplies and equipment. Is familiar with all procedural equipment and supplies. Understands the proper use, storage and troubleshooting of equipment. Troubleshoots certain problems and reports malfunctions to appropriate persons
  • Checks stock levels, restocks at least every shift, and cleans patient care areas and other areas of department
  • Answers the phone and directs calls to the appropriate persons. Utilizes hospital computer to carry out duties viewing data or other functions as appropriate
  • Uses sterile technique
  • Maintains aseptic environment for patients
  • Assists professional personnel in the control of supplies and medications
  • Assists with patient care activities in the pre/post procedure area as needed
  • Provides or assists with basic care requirements treatments and procedures
  • Shares knowledge and assists others when appropriate, including orientees and students
  • Utilizes appropriate channels of communication and maintains confidentiality
  • Participates in performance improvement activities including OFI’s, CQI teams, committees, and special projects
  • Keeps current on care center affairs and fulfills assigned care center responsibilities
  • Utilizes resources such as staffing, supplies, and equipment in an effective and efficient manner


Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited school of certified surgical technology Required or
  • Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program Required


Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year relevant experience as a CST Preferred


Skills and Abilities

  • CSTs must possess effective verbal and written communication skills using appropriate grammar, vocabulary, and word usage
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • This job requires computer and systems competency in the following areas: data entry; data retrieval; data assembly and organization, data use and analysis, and integration of diverse sources of data
  • As well, possess the ability to learn and use the provided electronic medical record system within three months of attaining position


Licenses and Certifications

  • Current CST Certification Required
  • State of Illinois Licensure as an LPN (Only required for LPNs) Required
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 Months of Hire Required

Compensation:

Hourly Range - $26.25 - $39.38

Incentives:

Eligible for evening/night, weekend shift incentive based on company policies and applicable job codes. Additional details will be provided during the interview process.

Bonus:

Potential for a performance-based bonus, subject to eligibility criteria and achievement of defined metrics. Details regarding bonus eligibility and performance goals will be provided during the interview process or upon hire.
