The opportunity

The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) supports ground-based spacecraft telecommunications as part of the international National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Deep Space Network (DSN), under contractual arrangements between NASA and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The position is a member of the ICT Team, which provides a range of ICT support services at the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex mission in accordance with the requirements of NASAs Deep Space Network.

The ICT Team supports the following ICT Services at CDSCC:

  • Server and network infrastructure & systems
  • Unified Critical Communications (e.g. Telephony, Paging, Radios, Email, Video Conferencing, etc.)
  • IP Operations Management
  • End User Support
  • Collaboration Tools and Data Management and Storage Services
  • Cyber Security.

Your high-level duties will include:

  • Design, install and maintain secure Administrative LAN system, internetworking devices, Flight LAN equipment and Critical Unified Communication networks to required technical standards.
  • Implement backup and recovery strategies, ensuring full restoration of network systems and configurations.
  • Monitor network performance and security, responding to faults, audits, incidents and leading technical investigations.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation and provide out-of-hours support for diagnostics and repairs where necessary.
  • Use established reporting tools and procedures to provide comprehensive management reports, as requested by the Systems Engineering Manager.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (including CSIRO, JPL and NASA) while mentoring junior staff and delivering clear technical communication.

Role particulars

Location: Tidbinbilla – Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC), ACT

Salary: AU$93,814 – AU$123,280 per annum plus Tracking Station Allowance of $133.81 per week, plus up to 15.4% superannuation (also eligible for fleet transport to & from site within a defined Canberra region)

Tenure & work schedule: Indefinite, full-time on a 9-day fortnightly schedule

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential

  • A tertiary qualification in an IT-related field (preferably networking) and/or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating the technical planning, maintenance and daily activities of a network environment.
  • Extensive experience with a range of internetworking devices.
  • Extensive experience in maintaining Critical Unified Communication devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, own and resolve complex problems, taking ownership through to successful completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage configuration system backups and recovery.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical recipients; in addition, proven experience in providing quality customer service.

Desirable

  • Knowledge, Skills or experience with Cyber Security disciplines.
  • System Administration skills in Unix, Linux and Windows.
  • Capable of working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to use CAD and graphics manipulation programs.
  • A registered cabler.
