What is the role?

The Technology Operations and Chief Information Officer Command is a critical enabler of the Australian Federal Police’s operational, investigative and corporate mission, by being responsible for the strategic leadership, delivery and sustainment of secure, resilient and innovative information and technology capabilities that underpin policing outcomes at a national and international level.

The Technology Operations and Chief Information Officer Command provides enterprise-wide stewardship of information, digital and technology assets, ensuring they are managed as secure, governed and enduring police capabilities. Through close engagement with operational stakeholders, the Command co-designs and delivers technology solutions that empower the frontline, enhance intelligence and information sharing, and maximise the AFP’s impact on the criminal environment.

Executive Level members of the Command operate in a complex and dynamic environment and are expected to demonstrate strong leadership, technical credibility and strategic acumen. Collectively, Executive Level members within the Command are responsible for:

• Providing high-level conceptual, technical and strategic advice to senior leaders and stakeholders on technology, information and digital enablement.
• Owning and leading complex technical capabilities or domains, including the adoption of industry best practice, modern architectures, and continuous improvement.
• Building and sustaining effective internal and external partnerships, including with operational commands, other government agencies and industry, to deliver integrated and future‑focused solutions.
• Leading and developing a highly skilled and professional workforce, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, learning and collaboration across the Command.
• Ensuring that technology and information capabilities are delivered in a manner that is secure, ethical, transparent and aligned with community expectations and organisational values.

What will you do?

The Technology Operations and Chief Information Officer Command is currently looking to engage highly capable applicants at the Executive Level. Although specific skills sets will be required for the current vacancies, the process may also be used to create a merit pool for future opportunities. The current vacancies are outlined below:

1. Coordinator Integrated Operational Systems: Responsible for the leadership, delivery and sustainment of nationally significant operational policing systems that underpin frontline capability and inter‑agency intelligence sharing.
2. Coordinator Technology Support & Enablement: Responsible for managing the delivery of high‑quality technology support services across the AFP, ensuring support services are responsive to operational demand.
3. Coordinator Planning & Management: Responsible for a wide range of strategic and technical operations activities including contract management, strategic communications, risk management and resource planning.

Successful applicants will be required to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations. This work may include:

• Ensuring all financial and human resources with their team is effectively directed to the achievement of business area outcomes
• Contributing to the development of corporate business planning and strategies and the strategic direction of activities within the AFP
• Exercising high level of influence on areas of specialisation and demonstrate business management capabilities
• Contributing to the AFP strategies and initiatives for continuous improvement and the long-term success of the AFP
• Providing high level conceptual and strategic advice and conduct briefings
• Building and sustaining internal and external professional networks and collaborative working relationships
• Using extensive knowledge and expertise to guide, mentor and develop team leaders and members to ensure the sustainability of skills and knowledge in the AFP
• Identifying, evaluating and supporting technological changes, policy and legislation within the relevant field that can be utilised to enhance the AFP's response capability
• Driving the provision of business area services and demonstrates political awareness and understanding
• Maintaining currency in policy, legislation and subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities outside the formal education process.

AFP appointees contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that successful applicants will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the respective positions as outlined below.

Essential Requirements

• You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.

• This position has been advertised in multiple locations, however only the Coordinator Technology Support & Enablement can be based nationally following negotiation with the panel. The Coordinator Integrated Operational Systems & Coordinator Planning & Management positions must be based in Canberra.
