Job Description
The I&C Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating, repairing, and improving the plant instrumentation, controls, monitoring, and automation systems that support safe and reliable operation of the Signal Hill Plant. The role partners with operations, maintenance, engineering, and outside contractors to sustain controls reliability, equipment availability, and compliance documentation.
Responsibilities
- Follow all CCI and site safety policies, procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, electrical safety practices, and work-permit requirements.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, and repair field instrumentation, transmitters, control valves, analyzers, switches, actuators, positioners, meters, protective devices, and associated control loops.
- Support maintenance and troubleshooting of DCS, PLC, turbine controls, HMI/operator interface equipment, networking components, I/O cards, power supplies, panels, and related control-system hardware.
- Assist with control logic checks, loop checks, alarm testing, instrument commissioning, functional testing, and startup/shutdown support.
- Review and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, loop sheets, logic diagrams, control narratives, wiring diagrams, instrument datasheets, and vendor manuals.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on plant instrumentation and control systems, document work in the maintenance management system, and maintain calibration and test records.
- Respond to plant upsets, alarms, trips, abnormal equipment behavior, and emergent instrumentation or controls issues to restore safe and reliable operation.
- Coordinate with operations to plan work, communicate equipment status, manage impairments, and minimize operational risk during troubleshooting or maintenance.
- Support regulatory, environmental, reliability, and safety compliance by maintaining accurate test, calibration, inspection, and repair documentation.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend reliability improvements, spare parts strategies, procedure updates, and controls enhancements.
- Support outages, contractor oversight, vendor service work, and project execution involving instrumentation, controls, electrical interfaces, or automation systems.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, technical certification, military technical training, instrumentation certification, electrical/control systems training, or equivalent industrial experience preferred.
- Experience with industrial instrumentation, calibration practices, control loops, PLC/DCS systems, HMI interfaces, electrical troubleshooting, and power plant or heavy industrial equipment preferred.
- Ability to use test equipment such as multimeters, process calibrators, signal generators, pressure calibrators, loop calibrators, and diagnostic tools.
- Ability to read and understand P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, control logic, electrical schematics, manuals, procedures, and technical specifications.
- Working knowledge of safe electrical work practices and troubleshooting in an operating industrial facility.
- Basic computer skills, including ability to enter work history, maintain calibration records, use email, and work with vendor software or plant information systems.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work around operating power-generation equipment, rotating machinery, high-pressure natural gas, high-pressure and high-temperature steam, electrical equipment, instrumentation tubing, and hazardous chemicals.
- Work indoors and outdoors in adverse temperatures, weather conditions, elevated areas, confined spaces, and noisy industrial environments while wearing required PPE.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, reach, kneel, grasp, push, pull, and perform work at panels, cabinets, junction boxes, skids, platforms, and field-mounted devices.
- Ability to lift and carry tools, test equipment, and materials; heavier lifts should be performed with appropriate assistance or mechanical aids under safe work practices.
- Position is expected to support a standard 40-hour work week, with flexibility for overtime, extended shifts, outage work, callouts, and emergent troubleshooting.
