Job Description

We are looking for a technically competent and motivated Hydraulic/Hydropower Engineer with 3–6 years of experience in hydraulic design, analysis and review of hydropower and water-resources projects.

  • The candidate will be involved in the conceptualisation, hydraulic analysis, design, modelling, review and optimisation of hydraulic structures and systems associated with dams, hydropower projects and water conveyance systems.
  • The role requires a strong understanding of fundamental hydraulic principles, the ability to interpret design requirements and project constraints, and the capability to develop technically sound and practical engineering solutions.
  • Depending on experience and demonstrated capability, the engineer will be expected to work independently on assigned components and progressively take responsibility for hydraulics of the complete project.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • A. Hydraulic Design and Analysis
  • Carry out hydraulic design and analysis for hydropower, dam and water-resources projects.
  • Develop and review hydraulic layouts for:
  • Spillways and energy dissipation arrangements
  • Chutes, stilling basins and flip buckets
  • Intake and approach channels
  • Head race tunnels and tail race systems
  • Pressure shafts and penstocks
  • Surge shafts
  • Bottom outlets and low-level outlets
  • Diversion and river-flow arrangements
  • Sediment exclusion and sediment management systems
  • Canals, pipelines and rising mains
  • Pumped-storage project hydraulic systems
  • Undertake hydraulic calculations for the above structures.
  • Optimise hydraulic layouts considering hydraulic performance, constructability, excavation, structural requirements and project constraints. B. Hydraulic Modelling
  • Develop, run and interpret numerical hydraulic models.
  • Carry out 1D/2D modelling using HEC-RAS for rivers, channels, spillways, flood routing and related hydraulic systems.
  • Carry out transient hydraulic analysis and water-hammer studies using appropriate software such as Bentley HAMMER/WHAMO.
  • Develop appropriate modelling assumptions, boundary conditions, mesh/model dimensions and governing cases.
  • Critically assess modelling results rather than relying solely on software outputs. C. Hydraulic Design Review (for Senior levels)
  • Review hydraulic calculations, drawings, reports.
  • Check consistency between Hydraulic calculations, Drawings, Design criteria, Project layouts, Model results and technical specifications
  • Identify technical gaps, inconsistencies and potential design risks.
  • Prepare clear and technically justified review comments.
  • Follow up closure of review comments and verify revised submissions.
  • Review native analysis/model files wherever required to verify the basis of calculations.
  • Provide technical inputs to project teams and resolve hydraulic design issues in coordination with structural, geotechnical, hydrological and other disciplines. D. Engineering Judgement and Problem Solving
  • Evaluate alternative hydraulic arrangements and recommend technically and economically suitable solutions.
  • Understand the interaction between hydraulics and structural, geotechnical, geological and construction constraints.
  • Assess the implications of changes in project layout, design discharge, reservoir levels, operating conditions and structural configuration.
  • Apply relevant IS codes, international guidelines, technical standards and good engineering practice. E. Project and Package Responsibility
  • For experienced engineers( 3–6 years) the role will include progressively higher levels of responsibility:
  • Independently undertake defined hydraulic calculations and modelling tasks.
  • Prepare calculation notes, drawings inputs and technical documentation.
  • Develop competency in hydraulic software and engineering procedures.
  • Coordinate with senior engineers and other disciplines.

Qualifications

M.Tech or equivalent in Water Resources or Hydraulics Engineering from the recognized university.

Software Skills

The candidate should preferably have experience with relevant hydraulic engineering software. Depending on experience and role requirements, proficiency may include:

  • HEC-RAS – 1D/2D hydraulic modelling
  • Bentley HAMMER & WHAMO– transient analysis / water hammer
  • OpenFOAM / ANSYS Fluent/ Flow 3D or equivalent CFD software – preferred for experienced candidates (Not mandatory)
  • QGIS / GIS tools
  • MS Excel and other engineering tools for hydraulic calculations and data analysis

Hydropower / Water Resources Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be preferred:

  • Concrete gravity dams
  • Embankment and composite dams
  • Spillways and energy dissipation systems
  • Hydropower intakes
  • Headrace and tailrace systems
  • Tunnels and shafts
  • Surge arrangements
  • Pressure conduits and penstocks
  • Bottom outlets and river outlets
  • Pumped-storage hydropower projects
  • River hydraulics and flood studies
  • Open-channel hydraulics
  • Pipeline and pressurised-flow systems
  • Physical hydraulic model studies
  • CFD studies of hydraulic structures
  • Hydraulic transient analysis

Additional Information

The engineer is expected to contribute to or independently prepare:

  • Hydraulic design calculations
  • Design basis and technical notes
  • Hydraulic modelling files
  • Model setup and result interpretation
  • Hydraulic design reports
  • Hydraulic drawings and layouts
  • Design review comments and comment-response sheets
  • Technical specifications and tender inputs
  • Technical comparison of design alternatives
  • Presentation material for client/technical meetings
  • Responses to client, PMC and review consultant comments
  • The engineer shall ensure that calculations, drawings, reports and model files are technically consistent and traceable.
