Role Purpose

About the Role

At Yarra Trams, we aim to provide our passengers with world-class transport services As an HVAC Maintainer, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring passenger comfort and fleet reliability by maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems fitted to our tram fleet.

This hands-on technical role is part of a unionised workforce and operates under the applicable Enterprise Agreement. You’ll work in a highly regulated environment where safety, compliance, and reliability are paramount.

Key Responsibilities

HVAC Maintenance & Fault Finding

  • Maintain, fault-find and repair HVAC systems installed on trams, including roof-mounted and underfloor units
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical and refrigeration faults across compressors, evaporators, condensers, fans, controls and sensors
  • Respond to in-service failures and depot-based defects in line with operational priorities

Preventative & Planned Maintenance

  • Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance in accordance with maintenance instructions and OEM requirements
  • Perform inspections, servicing, testing and component replacements to ensure fleet availability and passenger comfort
  • Identify emerging defects and support condition-based maintenance initiatives to reduce service disruptions

Electrical Works (Grade A)

  • Perform electrical work on HVAC and associated systems within the scope of a Grade A Electrical Licence
  • Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical manuals relevant to rolling stock

Safety, Compliance & Industrial Obligations

  • Comply with all WHS legislation, rail safety requirements, safeworking procedures and network rules
  • Ensure refrigerant handling meets ARCtick and environmental compliance requirements
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, risk assessments and continuous improvement activities
  • Perform all work in accordance with the applicable Enterprise Agreement

Documentation & Reporting

  • Accurately complete work orders, defect reports and maintenance records using the maintenance management system
  • Record refrigerant usage, test results and compliance documentation
  • Escalate safety, quality or asset risks through appropriate reporting channels

About You

You are a safety-focused trades professional with strong diagnostic capability and experience working in highly regulated environments.

Essential:

  • Trade qualification in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or similar
  • Grade A Electrical Licence
  • Refrigerant Handling Licence (ARCtick)
  • Proven experience in HVAC maintenance and fault finding
  • Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical and refrigeration systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
  • Commitment to safety, compliance and quality

Desirable:

  • Experience working on rolling stock, heavy vehicles or complex industrial plant
  • Familiarity with maintenance management systems
  • Experience working within a unionised or enterprise agreement environment
