About the Role

The HVAC Technician is responsible for the inspection, testing, diagnostics, monitoring, modification, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across Tanglewood and other BSO Berkshire-based properties. This role ensures all systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable codes and sustainability standards. The technician will coordinate with external contractors on all new installations and work collaboratively to maintain optimal environmental conditions essential to performances, and audience comfort. This position requires flexibility, including availability for evenings, weekends, and emergency response, particularly during the Tanglewood summer season.

Required Education and Experience

Key Responsibilities of the Role

HVAC Systems

  • Conduct routine inspections, testing, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on HVAC equipment, including air handling units, compressors, motors, drives, pumps, valves, fans, filters, condensers, refrigeration systems, and dehumidifiers.

  • Perform daily operational checks on mechanical systems critical to concerts, IT infrastructure, and venue operations.

  • Monitor system performance to ensure reliability, efficiency, and proper climate control.

  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by external HVAC contractors, ensuring quality and compliance.

  • Arrange for installation, servicing, and calibration of HVAC equipment and control systems.

  • Maintain detailed monthly reports documenting system performance, maintenance activities, and lifecycle planning.

  • Research and recommend equipment upgrades, system improvements, and best practices.

  • Provide technical input and guidance on HVAC-related capital projects.

  • Ensure timely scheduling and completion of all work related to external contractor service contracts.

Plumbing Systems (Vendor Oversight & Support)

  • Facilitate and oversee vendor work related to complex plumbing systems, including maintenance, repair, and installation.

  • Monitor and assist in the inspection and maintenance of piping systems for water, heating, cooling, gas, and waste.

  • Support efforts to diagnose malfunctions and ensure timely repairs.

  • Coordinate seasonal shutdown and startup of plumbing, irrigation, and pump systems.

  • Assist in replacement and installation of plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, and commercial kitchen equipment.

  • Ensure all plumbing work meets safety, efficiency, sustainability, and code compliance standards in collaboration with external contractors.

Electrical Support

  • Assist the Tanglewood Electrician with inspections, testing, and seasonal startup/shutdown procedures as needed.

General Facilities Operations

  • Coordinate with food and beverage teams to maintain kitchen equipment in compliance with health and safety regulations.

  • Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance during concerts and events, including nights and weekends.

  • Operate equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, aerial lifts, vans, and trucks safely and efficiently.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to plan and execute work effectively.

  • Apply industry best practices to improve efficiency, safety, and workmanship quality.

  • Participate in ongoing professional development in HVAC, plumbing, and green building technologies.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall facilities operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of an apprenticeship program with at least ten (10) years of experience in HVAC, electrical maintenance, or a related field.

  • Strong ability to interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and specifications.

  • Demonstrated mechanical systems experience in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and problem-solving.

  • Proficiency in safely using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical schematics and technical documentation.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Special Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

  • Capability to perform repetitive physical tasks, including reaching, bending, pushing, and twisting.

  • Comfortable working at heights, including climbing ladders and accessing roof-mounted equipment.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces and varying environmental conditions (extreme heat or cold).

  • Exposure to chemicals, compressed gases, and other potentially hazardous materials, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Availability for 24/7 on-call rotation and emergency response as required.

  • Participation in alarm response duties, with readiness to respond at all times.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.

  • OSHA 10 Certification (or ability to obtain)

Pay Rate Range: $30.50 - $33.50
