Job Title: HVAC Technician
Department: Building and Grounds
Reports To: Director of Building and Grounds


The HVAC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems that serve MATA’s facilities, including bus and trolley maintenance garages, transit centers, and administrative buildings. This position helps ensure a safe, comfortable, and reliable environment for employees and the riding public by keeping all HVAC systems operating efficiently and in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform installation, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of HVAC/R equipment, including air handlers, rooftop units, split systems, chillers, boilers, exhaust fans, unit heaters, and ventilation systems in MATA facilities.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment per established PM programs, including filter changes, coil cleaning, belt adjustments, lubrication, and operational checks.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control issues using appropriate test equipment and tools, and implement effective repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain and repair HVAC systems in bus/rail maintenance garages, body shops, maintenance storage areas, offices, and customer-facing areas such as transit centers.
  • Monitor and maintain ventilation and exhaust systems in specialized areas such as fueling stations, battery charging rooms, and wash bays to support safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Handle refrigerants in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements, including recovery, recycling, leak detection, and proper documentation.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, equipment manuals, and work orders to plan and complete assignments.
  • Coordinate with other trades (electricians, plumbers, general maintenance) and contractors to complete repairs and projects with minimal disruption to transit operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent in CMMS or other work order systems.
  • Adhere to all MATA safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout, PPE use, and OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in on‑call rotation as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited HVAC technical program or recognized apprenticeship preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 certification (Type II or Universal) required or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe after hire.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience servicing commercial or industrial HVAC systems; experience in a transit, fleet, or similar heavy-maintenance environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC mechanical, electrical, and control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work at heights and in confined spaces, and perform duties in hot, cold, noisy, and dirty environments typical of transit garages.

  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage multiple work orders with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills to explain technical issues to non‑technical staff and coordinate work with operations.
