Job Description

Commercial HVAC Technician installs, maintains, and repairs complex heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems in our K-12 facilities. They diagnose electrical and mechanical faults, perform routine preventative maintenance, and ensure heavy-duty climate control equipment operates efficiently.

Core Responsibilities

  • System Diagnostics: Troubleshoot and repair complex commercial equipment such as chillers, boilers, RTUs (Rooftop Units), VRF systems, and building automation controls.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, clean components, calibrate thermostats, and perform system testing to prevent costly equipment downtime.
  • Refrigerant Management: Safely recover, evacuate, and charge refrigerants in compliance with strict environmental regulations.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate digital or written logs for completed service calls, parts usage, and maintenance schedules.
  • Customer Service: Explain repair needs and system performance recommendations to facility managers and clients.

Typical Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Typically 3-5+ years of hands-on experience in a commercial or industrial HVAC/R setting.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED; completion of an HVAC technical training program or formal apprenticeship is highly preferred.
  • Certifications: EPA Universal Certification (Section 608) is mandatory; NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or specific manufacturer certifications are a plus.
  • Skills: Strong proficiency in reading wiring diagrams/blueprints and operating digital diagnostic tools.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy equipment (50+ lbs.), work in confined spaces, and tolerate varying outdoor/indoor temperatures.
