The HVAC - 3rd Year Apprentice supports commercial and industrial HVAC and mechanical work across the Metro Atlanta market. This role is designed for a developing HVAC technician who has completed foundational apprenticeship training and is ready to gain hands-on experience in commercial, industrial, and institutional mechanical environments.
This position will assist journeyman technicians, senior technicians, and project/service leaders with preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, equipment inspections, documentation, and safe work execution. The technician will be expected to continue developing technical skills while following ABM, customer, union, and site-specific safety requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ideal candidate is a motivated 3rd year HVAC apprentice with solid foundational skills, a strong safety mindset, and interest in building a career in commercial HVAC. This person should be dependable, coachable, comfortable working with journeyman technicians, and eager to grow into a fully qualified HVAC journeyman supporting commercial and industrial customers across the Atlanta market.
Assist with preventive maintenance and basic corrective maintenance on commercial and industrial HVAC systems.
Support work on RTUs, AHUs, split systems, heat pumps, fan coils, VAVs, exhaust fans, pumps, condensers, and related equipment.
Assist journeyman technicians with BAS/BMS checks, controls troubleshooting, equipment startup, and other HVAC systems as assigned.
Perform equipment inspections, filter changes, belt replacements, coil cleaning, drain checks, basic electrical checks, and general HVAC maintenance tasks.
Help identify equipment deficiencies and report findings to senior technicians or leadership.
Follow LOTO, PPE, SDS, permit-to-work, and site safety procedures while working in commercial and industrial environments.
Use CMMS or work order systems to document work performed, parts used, equipment conditions, and follow-up needs.
Support asset verification, PM setup, equipment labeling, model/serial number collection, and documentation cleanup during project ramp-up.
Assist with responding to service calls, alarms, and urgent equipment issues under supervision.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
Communicate professionally with ABM team members, customers, vendors, and site personnel.
Continue developing technical knowledge through on-the-job training, union apprenticeship requirements, safety training, and manufacturer/OEM exposure.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
Active 3rd year HVAC apprenticeship status or equivalent documented progression in a recognized HVAC training program.
2+ years of hands-on HVAC, mechanical, facilities maintenance, or related trade experience.
Basic knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, tools, safety practices, and troubleshooting methods.
Ability to assist with maintenance and repair tasks on RTUs, AHUs, split systems, heat pumps, fan coils, pumps, and related components.
Ability to read basic work orders, PM tasks, equipment labels, safety procedures, and manufacturer instructions.
Familiarity with LOTO, PPE, ladder safety, SDS, and basic job hazard awareness.
Basic computer skills and ability to document work in a CMMS or work order system.
Valid driver license and ability to travel to client sites across the Metro Atlanta area.
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to work overtime, flexible schedules, or emergency support as business needs require.
Preferred:
EPA 608 Certification or active progress toward certification.
Prior commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, education, manufacturing, airport, or similar HVAC exposure.
Exposure to larger RTUs, AHUs, BAS/BMS systems, VAVs, pumps, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, or other commercial HVAC equipment.
Familiarity with Johnson Controls, Metasys, Honeywell, Siemens, Trane, or similar BAS/BMS platforms.
OSHA 10, NFPA 70E awareness, or other safety training.
Experience using CMMS, service ticketing, or mobile work order platforms.
Strong interest in developing into a journeyman-level commercial HVAC technician.
