Under general supervision, the HVAC Technician 2nd Class performs semi-skilled HVAC work on a variety of equipment, including chillers, condensers, air conditioners, boilers, and ice machines. This role assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems and performs routine cleaning, adjustments, inspections, and basic troubleshooting of system components. Work is performed in accordance with safety regulations, company policies, and OSHA standards. Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours a day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and may be called back on short notice during power outages and other emergencies. Examples of duties

  • Assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment.
  • Performing routine inspections and identifying potential maintenance issues with HVAC equipment. Changing and cleaning filters regularly and assisting with washing and cleaning blower assemblies and condenser coils.
  • Assisting with the installation, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of ice machines and chillers.
  • Assisting with diagnosing and troubleshooting basic electrical and mechanical faults in HVAC systems under the direction of a higher-level technician.
  • Performing routine cleaning, adjustments, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems in accordance with established procedures.
  • Responding to emergency repair requests and assisting with timely and efficient repairs as directed.
  • Assisting with the installation, maintenance, repair, insulation, and cleaning of ventilation ducts, grilles, and dampers.
  • Maintaining accurate daily logs and records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment conditions.
  • Ensuring work is performed in accordance with applicable equipment and appliance standards, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), safety regulations, service standards, work instructions, and customer requirements.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of safety practices, procedures, and occupational hazards associated with the HVAC trade.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating principles, with a working knowledge of boiler systems.
  • Ability to assist with balancing air and water treatment systems in accordance with established HVAC procedures and protocols.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic HVAC schematics, diagrams, and work plans.
  • Must possess a valid Virgin Islands driver’s license.
  • Must possess the ability to successfully complete required safety courses and training.
  • Ability to properly use and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must wear all required personal protective equipment while on the Authority’s premises and while performing assigned duties.
  • Ability to work independently on routine assignments and effectively follow instructions from higher-level technicians and supervisors.
  • Available to work overtime, weekends, and respond to emergency call-backs as needed.
  • Ability to use a computer, work tablet, or other electronic devices to access drawings and work instructions, document work activities, and complete required training.

Supplemental information

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certificate, diploma, or associate degree in HVAC Technology from an accredited college, trade school, vocational school, or recognized trade organization; or
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with completed coursework or vocational training in HVAC technology.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in HVAC installation, cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in industrial and/or commercial facilities; or
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with HVAC-related coursework or training, and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in HVAC installation, cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in industrial and/or commercial facilities.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant HVAC experience may be considered.

Preferred Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations

  • EPA Section 608 Certification – Universal.
  • Certificate or recognized credential in HVAC Technology.
  • HVAC Excellence Core and/or Professional Technician Certification.
  • NATE Core and/or Specialty Certification.
