Job Description

Mountain Gateway Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The college is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia; the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt (northern portion) and Rockbridge; the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington; and the town of Clifton Forge. Mountain Gateway Community College is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Human Services Adjunct Instructor This position supports the expansion of the Social Science Associate of Science degree and Transfer Virginia ( TVA) Social Work Common Curriculum by increasing instructional capacity and strengthening the behavioral health workforce pipeline. The position includes both teaching responsibilities (1–2 courses, 6–9 credit hours) and a significant student recruitment function targeting dual enrollment high school students and incumbent workers employed by Community Services Boards and regional behavioral health organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

· Teach 1–2 courses (6–9 credit hours) in the TVA Social Work Common Curriculum such as HMS 100: Introduction to Social Services, SOC 266: Race and Community, and SOC 211: Cultural Anthropology.

· Develop and deliver engaging instruction in face-to-face, hybrid, or distance learning formats.

· Assess student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback.

· Create an inclusive classroom environment that supports diverse learners including high school and adult students.

· Collaborate with faculty to strengthen curriculum and student success strategies.

· Lead recruitment efforts by developing relationships with local high schools, Community Services Boards, and regional behavioral health employers.

· Promote awareness of behavioral health careers and educational pathways.

· Support marketing and outreach efforts to grow enrollment in the program.


Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
· Master’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, or related field (required).

· Knowledge of behavioral health or social services systems.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

· Commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching practices.

· Ability to engage high school students, adult learners, and community partners.

· Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively.


Additional Considerations
· Teaching experience at the community college level.

· Experience with dual enrollment students or workforce populations.

· Familiarity with online teaching platforms and distance learning.

· Experience in student recruitment or community outreach.

· Clinical experience in a behavioral health setting.
