The Public Advocate, an independently elected public official, serves as a direct link between city government and residents, acting as a “watchdog” for New Yorkers. The Public Advocate is a non-voting member of the New York City Council, an ex officio member of all Council committees and introduces and co-sponsors legislation. The Public Advocate serves on various City committees and appoints members to several boards and commissions.
The Office of the New York City Public Advocate reviews and investigates residents’ complaints about City services and administrative actions, assists people having difficulty receiving City services, assesses whether City agencies are responsive to the public, and recommends legislative or policy proposals to address identified service deficiencies.
The Human Resources Assistant will perform administrative tasks and services to support the effective and efficient operations of the office’s human resources functions. The Human Resources Assistant will serve as the initial point of contact on Human Resources related matters.
Responsibilities:
-Creates and maintains accurate and up-to-date digital and electronic human resources files, records, and documentation
-Work closely with the Office Assistant to ensure that digital/electronic files are also converted to hardcopy versions for retention in physical personnel and benefits files
-Supports all internal and external HR-related inquiries and requests and escalates more complex inquiries
-Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records
-Assists with onboarding of staff, interns and volunteers
-Conducts or assists with new hire orientation
-Serve as the sole HR point of contact in HR Manager’s absence
-Performs other duties as assigned

-Possess a strong desire to learn and grow within Human Resources
-Previous experience as an HR Assistant, Officer Manager, Administrative Assistant, or a similar position
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with discretion, professionalism, and diplomacy
-Excellent organizational and time management skills
-Strong attention to detail and follow through
-Proficient with Google Workspace or related software
-Proficient with or the ability to quickly learn HR related applications such as NYCAPS, CHRMS, PMS
