The Role

The HR Generalist provides day-to-day, hands-on HR support across assigned operational units. Serving as the primary point of contact for employees and frontline managers, this role handles transactional HR processes, first-level employee and labour relations, and policy interpretation, escalating complex, high-risk, and/or strategic issues to the HR Business Partner.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as the initial point of contact for frontline managers and employees staff regarding daily HR inquiries, workplace policies, and collective agreement interpretations.
  • Process seamless employee lifecycle changes including onboarding , role changes, leaves of absence, offboarding, and conduct retention interviews and exit interviews.
  • Maintain complete and accurate HR records, system data, and standard compliance reporting.
  • Oversee regional data integrity in Workday, guiding managers on self-service transactions, job changes, and complex organizational updates
  • Facilitate site-level engagement initiatives and analyze local turnover drivers, partnering with operational leaders to execute retention action plans.
  • Provide hands-on guidance to operations on routine performance management, documentation, and preliminary conflict resolution.
  • Conduct initial facts-gathering for basic workplace grievances or employee concerns; prepare documentation and escalate complex, sensitive, or high-risk matters to the HRBP.
  • Ensure consistent, fair application of employment standards, company policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Facilitate engaging new hire orientation programs to ensure smooth integration into the team.
  • Support the rollout of corporate HR programs (e.g., annual performance reviews, immigration, new hire orientation, engagement surveys) by coordinating logistics and tracking completion.
  • Perform other tactical duties as assigned to support daily HR operations.

What We’re Looking For(Qualifications)

  • 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in a human resources advisory role;
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French would be an asset (both verbal and written);
  • Strong knowledge and experience of current Canadian labour laws, Human Rights legislation and Employment Standards;
  • Experience working in a unionized environment;
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace including but not limited to Docs, Sheets and Gmail
  • Experience with HRIS (preferably Workday)
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license, access to a vehicle and the ability to travel to various office GFL locations
  • University or College education
  • HR Certification is an asset
