POSITION SUMMARY
From within a small Human Resources team, the HR Generalist provides comprehensive human resources support, with responsibility for accurate coordination of the company's recruiting, benefits, payroll, employment administration, and corporate safety and compliance programs. This position serves as a key resource to employees and management regarding HR policies, safety practices, regulatory compliance, workers' compensation, and environmental requirements.
The position coordinates with operational units to manage safety initiatives designed to maintain a safe, compliant workplace and reduce workplace injuries and exposures. Responsibilities include safety training, inspections, recordkeeping, incident investigation support, regulatory reporting, and coordination of hazardous material and hazardous waste management activities.
The HR Generalist works closely with management, supervisors, employees, payroll and benefits providers, safety vendors, environmental service providers, and regulatory agencies, as appropriate, to produce accurate payroll administration, effective HR practices, and a strong culture of workplace safety and regulatory compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources Generalist Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day HR support to employees, supervisors, and managers regarding Company policies, procedures, benefits, payroll, attendance, and employment practices.
- Assist with employee onboarding and orientation.
- Coordinate completion of required new-hire documentation and employment records.
- Maintain accurate employee records within the Company's HR information systems and personnel files.
- Assist with benefits administration, including employee enrollment, changes, employee questions, and coordination with benefit providers.
- Assists with bi-weekly payroll as needed.
- Support employee relations activities and assist with workplace investigations as assigned.
- Assist management with performance management, attendance, corrective action, and employee documentation.
- Assist with employee communications and Company-wide HR initiatives.
- Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, pre-employment screening, and new-hire activities as needed.
- Assist with employee separations, including termination documentation, final payroll information, benefit notifications, and other offboarding activities.
- Assist with payroll, benefit enrolments, safety, and regulatory audits.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable employment, payroll, safety and environmental regulations affecting assigned responsibilities.
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professional discretion when handling employee and Company information.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Corporate Safety Coordination
- Coordinate and support the Company's workplace safety program and promote a proactive culture of safety throughout the organization.
- Assist management in developing, implementing, maintaining, and communicating corporate safety policies, procedures, programs, and expectations.
- Coordinate required employee safety orientation and ongoing safety training.
- Maintain safety training records and monitor completion of required training.
- Conduct or coordinate routine workplace safety inspections and assist management in identifying unsafe conditions, practices, and potential hazards.
- Track identified safety concerns and corrective actions to ensure appropriate follow-up and closure.
- Assist supervisors and management with workplace accident, injury, near-miss, and safety incident investigations.
- Assist in identifying root causes and developing corrective and preventive actions following workplace incidents.
- Maintain required workplace injury and illness records and applicable regulatory reporting.
- Coordinate OSHA recordkeeping activities, including preparation and maintenance of required OSHA logs and summaries, as applicable.
- Monitor changes in workplace safety requirements and communicate relevant changes to management.
- Coordinate safety committee meetings, activities, inspections, and follow-up items as applicable.
- Assist management with job hazard analyses, personal protective equipment assessments, emergency response procedures, and other workplace safety initiatives.
- Coordinate safety-related vendors, consultants, training providers, inspections, and services.
- Prepare periodic reports for management regarding injuries, incidents, training, corrective actions, and safety performance.
Workers' Compensation and Injury Management
- Coordinate the administrative aspects of workers' compensation claims and serve as a liaison among employees, supervisors, medical providers, insurance carriers, and claims administrators.
- Ensure workplace injuries are reported promptly and required documentation is completed.
- Maintain workers' compensation files and related records.
- Monitor open workers' compensation claims and maintain communication with appropriate parties regarding claim status.
- Assist management with return-to-work and transitional-duty programs when appropriate.
- Coordinate information required for workers' compensation insurance renewals and audits.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Accounting, or a related field preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience may be considered.
Experience
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, payroll, safety, environmental compliance, or a related field preferred.
- Demonstrated experience processing or administering payroll strongly preferred.
- Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, distribution, or similar work environment preferred.
- Experience coordinating workplace safety programs preferred.
- Experience with hazardous materials, hazardous waste management, or environmental compliance preferred.
- Experience working with HRIS, payroll, timekeeping, and benefits administration systems preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of payroll administration and payroll-related processes.
- Working knowledge of federal and state wage and hour requirements.
- Working knowledge of human resources practices and employment laws.
- Working knowledge of OSHA workplace safety requirements and recordkeeping practices.
- General knowledge of EPA and applicable state environmental requirements concerning hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
- Ability to interpret and apply Company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and reconciliation skills.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize payroll, HRIS, safety, and environmental management systems.
Preferred Certifications and Training
The following certifications or training are preferred or may be required based upon assigned responsibilities:
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or comparable human resources certification.
- OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry training.
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training, when applicable to assigned duties.
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste training appropriate to the Company's generator status and assigned responsibilities.
- DOT Hazardous Materials training when responsibilities include preparation, offering, or coordination of regulated hazardous material shipments.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Physical Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

- Ability to perform duties in both office and manufacturing/industrial environments.
- Ability to walk through production, warehousing, and other operational areas to conduct safety and environmental inspections.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods when conducting inspections or training.
- Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, reach, climb stairs, and access work areas as necessary.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment while entering designated work areas.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, electronically, and in writing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in both a professional office environment and manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial environments. While performing duties in operational areas, the employee may be exposed to moving machinery, noise, chemicals, hazardous materials, temperature variations, and other conditions normally associated with manufacturing operations. The employee must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
