Orion Marine Group has an immediate opening for HS&E Safety Supervisor This position will be a field safety supervisor for the Gulf Coast Region. This position is accountable for developing and maintaining programs and policies in the areas of Employee Safety & Incident Prevention, Safe Work Practices, Safety Training, OSHA Compliance, Workers Compensation, Field Safety Audits, Emergency Response, Employee Wellness, Risk Management, Fire Protection, Pollution Prevention, and Safety Policies & Procedures at Orion. The incumbent is responsible for providing safety management oversight for marine construction operations in all geographic in which the Company has marine operations.
This position is accountable for the effective execution and technical support of the Health, Safety, and Environmental Programs at assigned locations.
Primary responsibilities focus on:
- Ensures that field safety programs and policies are in place to promote a safe work environment and that ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines.
- Monitors and implements the Project Specific Safety Plans, Employee Safety, Incident Prevention Programs, and Safe Work Practices.
- Works with the safety management team to establish short-term and long-term goals and objectives for the Company’s Health, Safety, & Environmental programs.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including Coast Guard, USACE, EM385-1-1, and MSHA knowledge as applicable, pertaining to safety, health, and environmental issues to promote compliance in each of these areas.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains a proactive internal safety audit program at project sites and locations to monitor Field Safety Representatives and operational employee work practices to ensure compliance with requirements and Company safety standards.
- Participates in addressing incidents and near misses through timely fact-finding investigation, determination of root cause, and implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Recommends necessary changes to standard operating procedures and corporate safety policies and procedures.
- Contributes to the periodic required updating and distribution of the Company’s Healthy, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) Policies and Procedures and other Company publications distributed to employees.
- Provides support and ensures consistency in the interpretation and implementation of HS&E policies, practices, and procedures.
- Provides support for the development of bid proposals for potential customers, for example: Construction Site Safety Plans, emergency action plans & statistical information.
- Works to provide administrative, analytical, and Safety project support and develops and maintains the Safety department office files and Safety Management System database.
- Assists with Safety inspections and Safety audits by participating as a team member.
- Assists with Safety statistical data analysis by identifying areas for continuous improvement.
- Provides claims (injury, damage and pollution) administrative support by reporting, documenting and gathering insurance-related information for the Safety and Compliance Manager.
- Keeps Regional HSE Management and local management informed on safety and health issues and progress toward accomplishing safety goals and objectives.
- Monitors workplace safety orientations for new employees, as required, and refreshes workplace safety training for existing employees. Develops improvements and modifications, as necessary.
- Provide Safety Training to employees such as: New Hire Safety Orientation, HSE Policy Training, General Safety Training, First Aid, CPR and AED Training.
- Monitors and promotes the Target Zero Safety program. Actively promotes recognition of successful efforts of employees and management to participate and improve daily work practices and overall safety performance.
- Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
- Participates and leads other Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to the success of the Company’s HS&E programs.

- Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.)
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 5 of construction safety experience (marine/heavy civil experience preferred)
- OSHA 510 – Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification such as CHST, STSC (preferred)
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, EM 385-1-1
- Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation
- Experience developing and delivering safety training and leading safety meetings
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
- Ability and willingness to travel as required to support project sites throughout the assigned region
The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of Safety Management, local, state and federal Safety Regulations, Incident Prevention, Emergency Response, Risk Management, and Standard Safety Policies & Procedures. Prior experience in Marine Construction is preferred. This individual must also possess training skills, communication skills (verbal and writing), and must be able to effectively interface with employees at all levels of the organization.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm when emergencies occur and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Regional HSE Manager or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment to work or visit the work locations including hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, earplugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s) or other equipment that may be required by the work being performed.
Ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate. Ability to develop and foster a positive work environment at all levels. Ability to resolve conflicts using problem resolution skills.
Ingenuity, resourcefulness and creativity are necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and Company standards, to develop safe work practice procedures, and to achieve established goals and objectives.
In addition, the HSE Supervisor must also be capable of:
- The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, earplugs, steel-toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed in the location the work is being done.
- Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters
- Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, or sitting for long periods of time
- Accessing confined spaces or climbing to elevated areas
- Adapting to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions
- Must have clean driving record and be able to pass physical and required drug/alcohol screening
