The HSE Intern will play a key role in supporting Monument Chemical’s health, safety, and environmental efforts across manufacturing operations. Under the guidance of experienced HSE professionals, the intern will see HSE initiatives through the full lifecycle—from initial planning and implementation to execution and validation. This role provides hands-on experience with regulatory compliance, safety programs, training validation, and site-level HSE initiatives, offering practical exposure to real-world safety operations within a chemical manufacturing environment while building foundational skills for a career in health, safety, and environmental disciplines.

Essential Functions

  • HSE Program Support: Assist with the implementation and improvement of environmental, health, and safety programs, including hazard communication, regulatory compliance, and site-level safety initiatives.

  • Documentation & Records Management: Create, review, and update HSE documentation such as Safety Data Sheet (SDS) materials, training matrices, procedures, and audit support documents to promote consistency and compliance.

  • Project Participation: Support assigned HSE projects, including SDS process improvements, firefighting foam strategy development, and annual HSE training validation across multiple sites.

  • Continuous Learning: Stay informed on evolving HSE regulations and best practices, participate in safety meetings and training sessions, and actively seek opportunities to build knowledge and skills in environmental, health, and safety disciplines.

Education Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline.

Skills and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles, including hazard communication, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety practices.

  • Ability to review documentation, identify gaps or inconsistencies, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to assist with documentation, reports, and training materials.

  • Previous internship, co-op, or academic project experience related to health, safety, environmental compliance, or manufacturing environments is preferred but not required.

  • Eligible to obtain a TWIC Card.

  • Preferred technical skills: Microsoft Office Suite and AI tools.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Work arrangement: Onsite.

  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day.

  • Sitting. Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day.

  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms one to two times per day.

  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.

  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects forward, downward or outward.

  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Lifting. Raising objects up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.

  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Possible subject to environmental conditions. Activities could occur inside and outside.

  • Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour.

  • Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle.

  • Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, safety glasses, gloves etc.
