Job Description

Note: This is a Fixed Term Contract of employment (temporary role) for 6 months only; focusing on all HSSE activities on a project within the terminal. The suitable candidate must be immediately available.

Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implement and monitor compliance with the project HSE Plan, procedures, and standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Impala Golden Rules of Safety.
  • Enforce stop work authority.
  • Ensure all project activities are executed in accordance with applicable HSE legislation and company requirements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety observations to identify hazards and unsafe practices.
  • Coordinate corrective and preventive actions arising from inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Ensure appropriate risk assessments and method statements are developed and communicated before work commences.
  • Monitor high-risk activities such as:
    • Working at heights
    • Confined space entry
    • Lifting operations
    • Hot work
    • Excavation activities
    • Electrical isolations/LOTO
  • Incident Management
    • Report, record, and investigate incidents, near misses, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions.
    • Participate in root cause investigations and assist in implementing corrective actions.
    • Maintain incident statistics and prepare HSE performance reports.
  • Training & Awareness
    • Conduct HSE inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors.
    • Facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings, and awareness campaigns.
    • Promote the company’s Golden Rules of Safety and behavioral safety initiatives.
  • Permit to Work & Compliance
    • Coordinate and monitor the Permit to Work (PTW) system.
    • Verify that permits, isolations, and control measures are properly implemented before work begins.
    • Ensure contractors comply with project HSE requirements and approved procedures.
  • Environmental Management
    • Monitor environmental compliance and ensure proper waste management practices are followed.
    • Support spill prevention and environmental protection initiatives.
    • Ensure environmental incidents are reported and investigated.
  • Emergency Preparedness
    • Participate in emergency response planning and drills.
    • Ensure emergency equipment is inspected and readily available.
    • Support crisis and emergency response activities when required.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Maintain HSE records, registers, inspection reports, and training records.
    • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports.
    • Track and monitor closure of HSE findings and action items.

Educational background

  • Diploma in Safety Management or relevant training
  • 3 years of HSE experience in the oil industry or comparable industry.
  • Have a knowledge and understanding of legal basics.
  • Any Professional Environmental Management or HSE Management related Qualification. E.g. IOSH, Nebosh, SAMTRAC, ISO Implementer, Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of petroleum terminal operations.
  • Ability to plan, work independently, work with diverse teams including senior management and third-party personnel.
  • Possess a sound knowledge and on the job experience in Oil Depot operation.
  • The HSSE Coordinator must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in Oil and Gas or Mining related field.
  • Work experience in a technical field, including operations work, is an added advantage.
  • Understanding and exposure to ISO management system; preferably 9001:2015 and 14001:2015 & 45001:2018).

Language: English

  • Good command of English both written and spoken is mandatory.
  • Fluency in Portuguese
