The prospective candidate will act as a primary safety coordinator, driving active employee engagement, routine compliance monitoring, and daily safety practices to support the overall operational vision and sustainability targets of STMicroelectronics.

Duties & Responsibilities The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Health and Safety Officer plays a key operational role in supporting, executing, and monitoring the site’s Health & Safety management practices in alignment with ISO 45001 standards and Chapter 646 of the Laws of Malta (Health and Safety at Work Act). Operating on the day central shift, this position works on the shop floor to safeguard all personnel—including employees, contractors, and third parties—while driving daily adherence to safety protocols and incident prevention.

  • ISO 45001 & Compliance Support: Assist with the daily maintenance and execution of the ISO 45001 and RBA frameworks, as well as EHS audit preparation. Help align daily operations with Chapter 646 of the Laws of Malta and statutory requirements.
  • Inspections & Risk Monitoring: Conduct routine workplace safety inspections and hazard observations, assist with site risk evaluations, and monitor routine environmental and workplace health controls (such as Legionella and water quality sampling).
  • Operational Wellbeing & Culture: Support site H&S initiatives that foster daily physical safety and workforce wellbeing across all departments.
  • Contractor & Third-Party Monitoring: Coordinate and monitor contractor safety compliance on site, ensuring alignment with site safety rules and permit-to-work systems.
  • Incident Reporting & Routine Operations: Perform initial incident reporting, gathering details for investigations, tracking basic H&S metrics/KPIs, and supporting emergency response readiness.
  • Policy Execution & Coordination: Help communicate updated safety policies, maintain routine documentation, and assist with preparing periodic tracking reports.
  • Training & Engagement: Coordinate and deliver routine safety training, onboarding sessions, and tool-box talks, championing active safety engagement and awareness among site personnel.
  • Liaison Support: Assist in routine operational communications and walkthroughs with local authorities (such as OHSA and CPD), external auditors, and safety equipment suppliers.
  • Emergency Response Team (ERT): Actively participate as an operational member/coordinator in the ERT, helping organize and participate in regular team drills and practical training.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: Formal academic degree qualifications are not required for this position. Relevant certifications, diplomas, or vocational training in Occupational Health and Safety, or practical experience in a similar industrial H&S role, will be considered an asset. Working knowledge of Chapter 646 of the Laws of Malta and ISO 45001 awareness is desirable.
  • Experience: Practical experience in health, safety, and environmental coordination within an industrial, manufacturing, construction, or engineering environment is preferred.
  • Certifications: Basic training/certifications in ISO standards, internal auditing, or first aid/fire safety are considered an asset.
  • Legislative Knowledge: Familiarity with Chapter 646 of the Laws of Malta (Health and Safety at Work Act) and basic local safety regulations.

  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with floor workers, department teams, and external suppliers.
  • Mindset: Practical, detail-oriented, approachable, and strongly safety-focused.
  • Teamwork & Leadership: Ability to encourage positive safety behaviors on the floor with a professional and ethical approach.
  • Resilience & Adaptability: Dependable, adaptable to changing operational priorities, and comfortable performing floor walks and inspections under dynamic factory conditions.
