ABOUT NORTHSIDE

Northside Center for Child Development serves more than 5,500 children and families across New York City each year through high-quality, outcome-driven behavioral health, early childhood education, and enrichment services. With over $34 million in annual funding, Northside provides the comprehensive support children and families need to overcome adversity, build resilience, and pursue their dreams.

Founded in 1946 in Harlem, Northside has been a cornerstone of the community for eight decades, leading the way in integrating education and mental health to support children’s development. Several of Northside’s innovative programs were the first of their kind in Harlem, setting standards of care that continue to influence social service agencies throughout the United States today.

Northside’s founders, Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Phipps Clark, were renowned, pioneering psychologists whose groundbreaking research was instrumental in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education landmark Supreme Court decision that declared school segregation unconstitutional. Their belief in the worth, dignity, and potential of every child continues to guide Northside’s mission and inspire its work today. Northside is driven by its vision and principle, “Each Child…First Chance.”

About Northside Center for Child Development

Northside Center is a nonprofit that provides expert behavioral/mental health, education and enrichment programs to children and families living in poverty. Each year, we help 4,000 New York City children and families rise up and thrive.

Northside was founded by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark. Their work—which showed how racial inequality negatively affected the self-esteem of young children—helped change the course of American history.

The Clarks’ groundbreaking research, including the black-white doll studies, were critical to the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which legally ended the segregation of public schools. Their findings were the first-ever social science research to be submitted as hard evidence in the Court’s history.

Our Founders believed in tapping into the inherent strengths of children and families to help them overcome obstacles. This philosophy continues to be the bedrock of our work today. Our goal is to instill, and in many cases, rebuild self-esteem in the children that we serve.

Northside Center's Mission

Northside Center provides children and families the support they need to overcome adversity and thrive. Our high quality outcome-driven behavioral, mental health and education services propel struggling children forward... away from the ill-effects of poverty and racism; toward a future limited only by the scope of their dreams.
