Job Description

Provides and implements the therapeutic recreational scope of service for the County’s Therapeutic Recreation services programs. Assists in the teaching and planning of activities within the prescribed recreation interest area. Work is performed under technical supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Plans and implements activities and programs to meet the needs of individuals with various disabilities (year-round activities and summer camps).

Facilitates inclusion of individuals with disabilities into parks and recreation activities.

Recruits and supervises volunteers. Plans schedules and assigns work.

Publicizes programs and special events.

Makes independent decisions regarding programs or participants.

Organizes and directs programs for special needs at a local school site or community center.

Assists with the development and maintenance of a daily schedule of arts, crafts, games, sports, and trips for individuals with special needs.

Maintains accurate records.

Collects authorized fees.

Supervises and leads participants in scheduled activities.

Completes required forms and submits to supervisor.

Ensures proper or authorized use of buildings during recreation program activities.

Performs minor custodial duties appropriate to recreation programs such as mopping, dusting, picking up litter.

Ensures proper care and use of all recreation equipment.

Ensures safe and proper conduct of all persons who attend Recreation programs at the assigned facility.

Maintains order and enforces all recreation and school regulations relating to the use of the facility.

Staffs special events as required.

Other Duties

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills (These are pre-employment KASs that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of—

  • Principles and practices of recreational programming.

  • Autism Spectrum and other developmental, physical, and emotional disabilities.

  • Leisure Education.

  • Inclusion techniques and program/activity adaptations.

Ability to--

  • Plan, organize and lead specialized and inclusive recreational programs.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, community and co-workers.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Maintain and prepare required records in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Deal effectively with the public.

  • Interact with children.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

Completion of the eleventh grade.

Experience:

Six months experience working with the public and six months experience working with individuals with special needs.

Licenses or Certificates:

CPR and First Aid Certificates desired.

Special Requirements:

Subject to background investigation.

Work Permit required if under 18 years of age.

Physical Demands:

Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors and outdoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring of lifting objects up to 100 pounds; operation of keyboard devices.

Unusual Demands:

Work varied schedule to include evenings and weekends.

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $19.04 per hour

Grade H07, Hourly position, up to 40 hours per week
