Pay Range: $135,000 - $155,000 CAD

The HR Manager is responsible for leading the human resources function, ensuring compliance with labour laws, company policies, and collective bargaining agreements (CBA), if applicable. This role serves as a strategic partner to facility leadership, driving workforce planning, labour relations, employee engagement, talent acquisition, performance management, and compliance to support business objectives. The HR Manager will also play a key role in fostering a high-performance culture while mitigating risks.

What you will be doing

Workforce Planning & Talent Development

  • Execute workforce plans that align talent with operational goals.
  • Lead succession planning and talent-pipeline development to ensure future leadership and skill readiness.
  • Prioritize training needs and coordinate development programs, apprenticeships, and upskilling.
  • Coach facility managers and supervisors to strengthen people leadership.

Employee Relations & Engagement

  • Resolve escalated employee concerns and grievances through open communication and conflict resolution.
  • Foster an inclusive culture that encourages feedback and reduces alert-line issues.
  • Drive engagement and retention through recognition and work-life balance initiatives.
  • Conduct employee surveys, analyze results, implement action plans, and track improvements in retention and morale.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Partner with GBS Recruiting on talent strategies aligned with facility workforce needs.
  • Oversee full-cycle recruitment, from posting and interviews through selection and hiring.
  • Improve onboarding to ensure a smooth new-hire transition.
  • Align recruiting with internal posting and seniority-based bidding processes, as applicable.
  • Coordinate and participate in plant interviews.

Performance Management

  • Lead annual performance appraisals in alignment with Hydro processes, facility objectives, and applicable external requirements, including the CBA.
  • Guide managers on goal setting, evaluations, and constructive feedback.
  • Address performance issues in compliance with Hydro policies for improvement plans and progressive discipline.

Compensation, Benefits & HR Operations

  • Ensure payroll accuracy, including wage structures, shift differentials, and contractual pay provisions.
  • Collaborate with Shared Services and cross-functional partners.
  • Oversee legally compliant benefits and leave administration.
  • Sponsor recognition programs that reinforce performance and contributions.
  • Optimize HR systems for efficiency, accuracy, and compliance tracking.

Strategic HR Leadership

  • Align HR strategy with facility goals in partnership with senior management.
  • Lead organizational development supporting restructuring and operational improvement.
  • Analyze workforce trends and report executive insights on KPIs, including turnover, absenteeism, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Champion change, organizational transitions, and continuous improvement.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with employment laws, including ESA, OHSA, MOL, and WSIB requirements, and company policies.
  • Enforce HR policies and conduct audits to verify legal compliance.
  • Protect confidential employee data in accordance with company policies and labour laws.

Labour Relations

  • Serve as the primary union contact for grievances, negotiations, and labour disputes.
  • Ensure compliance with CBA provisions.
  • Lead collective bargaining, including cost analyses and contract proposals.
  • Investigate workplace disputes, discipline, and grievances, ensuring consistent policy application.
  • Address CBA-related performance issues and requirements.
  • Administer benefits and leave in compliance with the CBA and legal requirements.

What will make you successful?

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred — or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of HR experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, including at least 2 years in a unionized setting (if applicable).
  • Experience in collective bargaining, workforce planning, HR compliance, and talent management required.
  • Strong knowledge of labour laws (NLRA, FLSA, OSHA, FMLA, ADA) and CBA interpretation, where applicable.
  • Experience managing union negotiations, grievance handling, and employee relations, where applicable
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems, timekeeping software (e.g., Success Factors, UKG/UltiPro), and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to analyze HR metrics to identify trends and drive process improvements
  • English required; additional language skills are a plus.

  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing settings, balancing priorities effectively.
  • Proactive problem solver with a data-driven approach to HR strategy.
  • Strong conflict resolution, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Minimal travel (less than 10%)
