HR Manager | Workington | Up to £43,500 | Hybrid (2–3 days from home)

Looking for an HR leadership role with a values-led organisation, where the work genuinely matters and you're trusted to make your mark? This is a brand new role, and your chance to lead a small, capable HR team and build a professional, robust people function that the whole organisation can rely on.

Our client is a well-established, values-led charitable membership organisation in Cumbria. With a large busy workforce, it's a busy, friendly and fast-paced environment where real teamwork runs through everything. You'll report to the HR Director and sit as a key part of the leadership team, leading a small HR team of three and acting as a trusted operational partner who helps shape workforce stability, manager capability, engagement and culture.

The Role

This is a hands-on, operational leadership role with real influence. You'll take ownership of the operational HR agenda, lead and develop your team, and provide practical, commercial people support that makes a genuine difference across the organisation. You'll:

  • Lead and develop the HR team, building capability and confidence
  • Own complex employee relations matters and manage organisational risk
  • Coach and support managers across the organisation
  • Drive recruitment, retention and wider workforce initiatives
  • Lead workforce reporting, planning and people projects
  • Contribute to organisational development and continuous improvement

About You

You'll be an experienced HR professional who enjoys the operational side of HR. You're confident handling employee relations, comfortable challenging constructively, and you enjoy building relationships and solving problems in partnership rather than simply applying policy. Above all, you like making things happen and bringing people with you.

This could also be the perfect step up for an experienced HR Advisor who's ready for their first HR Manager role. If you've built a strong generalist foundation and you're looking for the chance to lead a team and own the agenda, you'll have real support around you to grow into it.

  • CIPD Level 5 qualified, or equivalent experience
  • Strong operational HR and employee relations background
  • A confident coach and advisor to managers
  • Organised, proactive and solutions-focused
  • A leader who enjoys developing others and building a strong team
