HR Generalist/Senior HR Generalist

College of Applied Health Sciences

The College of Applied Health Sciences (AHS) (http://www.ahs.illinois.edu) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are searching for an HR Generalist/Senior HR Generalist to manage a variety of human resource activities and assist with complex HR activities, escalating as needed.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

HR Generalist

HR Information Systems & Appointments Management

  • Responsible for employee appointments, troubleshooting transactions to ensure accurate results and escalating complex issues as needed.
  • Enter routine and non-routine data and pulls reports.
  • Ensure accuracy of input data and reports and/or resolves minor discrepancies.
  • May develop new reports.
  • Participate in appropriate systems testing and/or feedback.

HR Compliance & Policy

  • Ensure adherence to HR policies and legal requirements through tracking, training, and internal reviews.
  • Identify areas of concern related to adherence to HR policies and legal requirements.

Payroll, Time Reporting, and Leave Management

  • Process payroll and timesheets, including unique payments like summer salary.
  • Address complex timesheet/leave issues and return timesheets/leave requests as needed.
  • Process routine and non-routine pay adjustments.
  • Administer and track FMLA, PLFA, or other managed leave categories.
  • Inform staff of all regulations/policies relating to leave usage and time reporting.

Recruitment and Talent Acquisition

  • Responsible for independently coordinating search, hiring, and onboarding processes for student, hourly, and full-time hiring needs, including recruitment efforts.
  • Communicate and implement search procedures aligned with best practices and compliance needs, advising search committees and hiring managers.
  • Communicate with applicants and new hires, facilitating interview, hiring, and onboarding processes.
  • Develop job postings.

Job Classification & Analysis

  • Conduct job classification and analysis processes.
  • Provide guidance on job descriptions, promotions, and titles.
  • Identify out-of-scope duties and recommend title changes based on overall responsibilities, as appropriate.


Senior HR Generalist

HR Information Systems and Appointments Management

  • Responsible for managing employee appointments and records, and the interaction between multiple types of appointments to result in appropriate pay and employee status information.
  • Enter routine and non-routine data, pulls routine and non-routine reports, developing new reports as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy of input data, resolve any discrepancies, consider long-term data retention and data integrity.
  • Participate in appropriate systems testing and provide feedback.

HR Compliance & Policy

  • Ensure adherence to HR policies and legal requirements through tracking, training, and internal reviews.
  • May develop and implement internal compliance strategies.
  • Provide expertise on HR policies and legal requirements.

Recruitment and Talent Acquisition

  • Responsible for independently coordinating search, hiring, and onboarding processes for roles at all levels in all employment categories applicable to the unit, including recruitment efforts.
  • Communicate with applicants and new hires, facilitating interviews, hiring, and onboarding processes.
  • Communicate and implement search procedures aligned with best practices and compliance needs, advising search committees and hiring managers.
  • Contribute to overall hiring plans, providing guidance on search strategies aligned with talent needs (e.g., multi-level searches, search timing).
  • Oversee advertising and branding efforts/improvements.

Payroll, Time Reporting, Leave Management

  • Process all payroll and timesheets.
  • Process all required pay adjustments.
  • Assist with the development of and implementing of related guidelines.
  • Responsible for overall unit management of FMLA, PLFA, or other managed leave categories.
  • Counsel and resolve complex or sensitive issues related to leave.
  • Inform and advise employees on complex regulations/policies relating to leave usage and time reporting.

Job Classification and Analysis

  • Oversee job classification and analysis processes for designated groups.
  • Assist with the development of internal-to-unit classification strategies.
  • Provide expertise on job analysis and evaluation.
  • Identify out-of-scope duties and recommend title changes based on overall responsibilities, as appropriate.

Employee Learning and Professional Development

  • Lead or co-lead the delivery and development of informational or training sessions.
  • Advise employees on short- and long-term strategies for professional development and career growth.
  • Coordinate with supervisors to implement promotions, career/succession planning, and cross-training opportunities.
  • Act as a resource for others regarding employee learning and professional development.

Qualifications

Required

HR Generalist

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a field closely related to the position

Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties

Senior HR Generalist

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a field closely related to the position

Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to prioritize work and escalate issues using independent judgment.

Ability to develop/establish strong working relationships with Department Heads, Directors, faculty, and staff.

Ability to promote non-biased treatment of faculty, staff, students, and prospective candidates.

Knowledge of university and campus policies as they relate to HR functions to ensure all related guidelines and procedures are administered appropriately.

Salary and Appointment Information

These are 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 – Human Resource Associate positions, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The budgeted salary range is:

HR Generalist is $50,000 - $65,000 annually

Senior HR Generalist $60,000 - $80,000 annually

The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of the above named factors.

Work is performed on campus with many in person trainings and meetings required. Hybrid work options may be available for this position after an initial training/probationary period, but with the requirement that onsite availability may be needed at any time with short notice.
