The City of Auburn is looking for a talented Housing Repair Technician to add to our team! This position offers a wide variety of hands-on projects throughout the Auburn community. No two homes or projects are exactly alike. The Housing Repair Technician will evaluate residential properties, identify needed repairs, develop solutions, and complete eligible repair and maintenance work that directly improves the health, safety, accessibility, and quality of life of Auburn homeowners.

Projects may include repairing unsafe stairs, decks and ramps, replacing damaged flooring, repairing doors and windows, addressing weatherization issues, completing minor plumbing and electrical repairs, installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, repairing roofing and exterior components, improving accessibility for residents with disabilities, and addressing other health and safety concerns within the home.

A significant portion of the work is performed on manufactured homes, providing the employee with opportunities to work with a variety of construction types, materials, building systems, and unique repair conditions.

The position also provides opportunities to independently evaluate problems and develop practical repair solutions. For projects requiring licensed contractors or specialized expertise, the employee may assist with developing scopes of work and coordinating the necessary repairs.

Most importantly, the work has a direct community impact. The Housing Repair Program helps low-income Auburn homeowners remain in safe, healthy, and affordable housing by addressing repairs they may otherwise be unable to complete.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Demonstrated experience performing residential construction, carpentry, maintenance, or home repair work.
  • Strong hands-on carpentry skills and working knowledge of common residential building systems, including basic plumbing, electrical, mechanical, roofing, flooring, doors, windows, decks, stairs, and weatherproofing.
  • Ability to inspect and evaluate residential conditions, troubleshoot problems, determine appropriate repairs, and independently complete assigned work.
  • Ability to safely and proficiently operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other equipment commonly used in residential construction and repair.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and potential environmental hazards, including suspected asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint, and follow established safety procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to properly select and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow workplace safety requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents, repair instructions, manufacturer specifications, work orders, and basic residential code requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work respectfully and professionally inside occupied residences and communicate effectively with homeowners, coworkers, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple repair projects, manage time effectively, and complete quality work with limited supervision.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate City vehicles, including vans with limited visibility, and tow, maneuver, back, and park a trailer up to 12 feet in length.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with residential construction and repair work and to work in a variety of residential environments and weather conditions.
