The Housing Pathways Support
Practitioner provides housing and homelessness support through early
intervention, crisis response, and intensive case management for individuals
and families with complex needs. The role involves holistic assessment, culturally
informed planning, and advocacy to secure safe, affordable housing. Working
within a trauma-informed, culturally safe framework, the Practitioner partners
with Aboriginal communities to strengthen connections to culture and support
positive housing outcomes, while also offering specialist advice to enhance
broader service delivery.

Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of
about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic
services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders &
Disability and Early Childhood Education.

self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that
enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart
of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Housing Pathways Support
Practitioner, within the Youth Services and Housing Pathways unit, provides
housing and homelessness support and advice. The role operates with autonomy
and professional judgement to deliver early intervention, crisis responses, and
intensive case management for individuals and families with complex housing
needs. The Practitioner undertakes holistic assessments, develops culturally
informed case plans, advocates with housing providers, and facilitates access
to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing options.

Grounded in a culturally
safe, trauma-informed approach, the role works in partnership with Aboriginal
community members to navigate housing systems while strengthening connection to
culture, family, and community. The position also provides secondary consultation
and housing advice within the program, supporting coordinated and effective
service delivery.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and
    commitment to, the Aboriginal community and local Aboriginal culture, with the
    ability to work in culturally safe and respectful ways.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience
    in the housing and homelessness sector, including an understanding of the
    systemic barriers and impacts experienced by people at risk of or who are
    experiencing homelessness.
  • Proven ability to undertake holistic
    assessments, provide intensive case management, and deliver appropriate
    referrals and housing pathway planning for clients with complex needs.
  • Capacity to exercise initiative and
    work autonomously, providing housing advice and secondary consultation within
    the program.
  • Ability to provide clear, concise, and
    culturally appropriate communication, including the provision of advice on
    complex matters within the practice area.
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement
    and customer service skills, with demonstrated ability to build and maintain
    effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, housing providers,
    and external agencies.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in
    maintaining accurate records, managing sensitive information, and upholding
    confidentiality, ethical practice, and organisational policies.
  • Strong organisational and time
    management skills, including the ability to prioritise competing demands,
    alongside sound computer skills including Microsoft Office and client
    management systems.

Qualifications and Registrations
Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

  • Valid Victorian driver’s licence ESSENTIAL
  • Degree, or Diploma with substantial
    experience in a relevant field ESSENTIAL
  • A working knowledge and experience of
    the housing and homelessness sector ESSENTIAL
  • A satisfactory Working with Children
    Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander
    background DESIRABLE
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC
    requirements ESSENTIAL
